The Story of a Homegrown Supply Chain Breakthrough Behind a Milk Carton Top

High-barrier aluminum foil tops have long relied on imports, with long shipping times and unstable supply, which has been a major headache for domestic liquid food packaging companies. Asia Pulp & Paper (Shandong) dug deep into customer needs and teamed up with leading top carton manufacturer QuanHua Packaging. After a year of technical research, they developed their own top carton base paper compatible with aluminum foil, completely breaking free from overseas supply constraints. This win-win approach for both upstream and downstream players offers a great example of localizing the food packaging supply chain.

Quanhua Roof Pack Samples

In the liquid milk packaging field, roof packs with an aluminum foil layer can achieve long-term storage of drinks at room temperature thanks to their strong barrier properties, and market demand keeps rising. But previously, there was a lack of supporting specialized cardboard in China, so the raw materials had to be imported from overseas, leaving many packaging factories struggling with supply issues for a long time.

Jinan Quanhua Packaging, a leading manufacturing company in the province and a top domestic roof pack enterprise, has been cooperating on base paper with Asia Pacific SM (Shandong) since 2019. Relying on SM's stable quality, ready stock, and technical support, they've been purchasing standard coated base paper long-term. However, the company always faced a core problem: for roof packs requiring aluminum foil, there's no mature domestic supply of cardboard, so everything had to be imported. Long sea shipping times, combined with port congestion, international situations, typhoons, and other uncontrollable factors, often delayed shipments for months, constantly tying up production schedules.

The customer's needs directly guide our R&D direction. After receiving Quanhua's feedback on pain points, Asia Pulp & Paper immediately coordinated multiple departments-R&D, production, and sales-to launch a special technical campaign. With no mature processes to refer to domestically, the team had to start from scratch. Balancing multiple indicators like pulp ratios, machine compatibility, light transmission, and cardboard stiffness was tricky; adjusting one parameter could easily cause another performance metric to fall short. After countless trials, tweaks, and reworks, the R&D team never stopped pushing forward.

To match the client's on-machine testing, APP proactively adjusted capacity, materials, manpower, and even the overall production schedule, fully cooperating with the sample testing. Quanhua also went the extra mile, voluntarily handling test samples that didn't meet standards under controlled quality conditions to reduce paper company losses, jointly promoting process optimization.

After a whole year of repeated refining, both sides finally found the optimal balance for various performance aspects and successfully developed a dedicated cardboard for roof packaging compatible with high-barrier aluminum foil processes.

Mutual Benefits of Cooperation

For Quanhua Packaging: Saves on import tariffs and long-distance shipping costs, no need to stock up months in advance, completely eliminates the risk of production halts due to overseas supply delays, greatly enhances production autonomy;

For Asia Pulp & Paper: Becomes one of the few domestic paper companies capable of mass-producing this technology, opens up a new niche market, and creates a new growth point for performance;

For the industry: Achieves a breakthrough in domestic production of aluminum-foil roof-pack cardboard, providing local liquid food packaging companies with a stable, low-cost, and fast local supply chain solution.
