Three Steps to Achieve Optimization of Cigarette Pack Hot Stamping Process

In the field of cigarette packaging printing, hot stamping is a key process for enhancing the visual texture of products and brand recognition. When Xuchang Yongchang Printing Co., Ltd. undertook the Chinese version cigarette packaging printing business for Hebei China Tobacco Zhangjiakou Cigarette Factory's 'Lotus (90mm Slim)' product, it faced challenges such as the complex hot stamping process and tight resources. Through technological innovation and process optimization, the company achieved dual improvements in production efficiency and resource utilization, providing a practical reference for cost reduction and efficiency improvement in cigarette packaging hot stamping processes.

Project Background and Challenges

The Chinese version packaging design for 'Lotus (90mm Slim)' cigarettes is exquisite, with abundant hot-stamping elements, requiring six hot-stamping processes: stamping strips, stamping floral skirts, stamping label flowers, positioning stamping, stamping lotus lines, and stamping lotus leaf lines. Under the traditional production model, six single-station hot-stamping machines or three dual-station hot-stamping machines would be needed, resulting in high stress on machine availability, production time, and operator resources. Moreover, the order schedule is already fully booked, creating an urgent need to alleviate resource pressure through process optimization.

Hot-Stamping Process Optimization Practice

To address the resource shortage problem, the company's technical lead for the hot-stamping process initiated the formation of a technical task force. Using a three-step strategy of 'theoretical analysis-experience planning-on-site practice,' the team optimized the hot-stamping process.

01/ Innovation in Foil Pulling Method

Breaking the conventional idea of unidirectional foil pulling, and based on the pattern distribution distances on the stamping plate, horizontal foil pulling is applied for stamping the floral skirt (as shown in Figure 1), and vertical foil pulling is applied for positioning stamping. This 'crosswise' approach enables synchronized operation of hot-stamping processes in different directions on the same machine.

02/ Adaptation of Process Details

(1) Adjust the position and orientation of the sponge on the mounting board to ensure even and stable pressure when foiling in different directions.

(2) With the strong support of Kaituo and Jinguang electroplating companies, communicate the compatibility of foiling temperatures for the two types of electroplated aluminum. The lotus group uses regular plain blue electroplated aluminum, while the positioning foil uses holographic positioning mark electroplated aluminum. The foil stamping results for positioning are shown in Figure 2. By adjusting the temperature parameters, stable performance of the two materials on the same machine can be achieved.

(3) Finely adjust the foil stamping machine's step parameters, foil unwinding shaft pressure, and foil rewinding shaft tension to ensure the transmission of metallized aluminum and stamping accuracy.

03/ On-site Practical Verification

The technical team worked tirelessly in shifts and carefully fine-tuned the settings. After multiple rounds of testing, they successfully achieved on a single-station foil stamping machine the "placement of floral skirt stamping and vertical-horizontal foil feeding simultaneously," ensuring stamping quality while integrating processes, as shown in Figure 3.

Optimization Results

The core outcome of this process optimization is the reduction in usage of one hot stamping machine, directly saving machine usage, production time, and labor costs, effectively alleviating scheduling pressure and providing a solid guarantee for on-time order delivery. At the same time, the surface after stamping (as shown in Figure 4) presents delicate texture and pattern precision, verifying the balance achieved by the process optimization between "efficiency improvement" and "quality assurance."

The optimization of the foil stamping process for cigarette packaging needs to be based on a combination of 'technological breakthroughs' and 'on-site practical experience.' Xuchang Yongchang Printing's innovative practice in the foil stamping process of the 'Lotus (90mm Slim)' Chinese version cigarette pack not only solved the project's own resource constraints but also provided replicable experience for improving efficiency in similar complex stamping processes within the industry. The key is that only through foil-pulling innovation, fine-tuning of process parameters, and team collaboration can production resources be efficiently utilized while ensuring quality.
