When it comes to the scope of prepress production, you have to mention the typesetting work of books or magazines. Because of the standardization and industry normative nature of book magazines, this method has certain skill and execution. At present, most of the printing houses are mostly in the form of hand-stamping for the printing and imposition of book magazines. However, with the gradual promotion of electronic digital typesetting technology, computer typesetting will replace the manual imposition work behavior. For the selection of computer typesetting software, most of the domestic production staff use PageMaker, Peking University Founder and some graphics such as CorelDRAW, Illustrator, FreeHand and other software. Some foreign-funded enterprises are teaching some more advanced science to the mainland production staff. Professional typesetting software, such as QuarkXPress. Here, apart from the typesetting software such as PageMaker and QuarkXPress, I chose CorelDRAW, a large-scale professional software that combines the most extensive graphic images and typesetting in China, to introduce some simple layouts.

CorelDRAW is a professional drawing software, and also an extremely powerful typesetting software. There is almost no book or publication that can be seen in the market. The vast number of graphic designers and prepress producers in China all have the necessary understanding and mastery. Together with another image processing software, Photoshop, it is an indispensable tool for graphic designers to work on the job.

1. Arrangement of the layout

The default page layout of CorelDRAW's working environment is to use A4 office paper, which is widely used in the world. This paper is oriented to the office and not to the book magazine. Therefore, we use CorelDRAW to make the layout of book and magazine. At the time, some settings must be made for this layout. Of course, we can completely ignore the existence of this paper, and adopt a better way to handle the setting of the working environment we are going to do, that is, using some rectangular boxes. Visually represent the actual paper requirements we want.

The method described in this article is not based on the typesetting method required by CorelDRAW software itself, but is based on the personal experience of prepress work that I have been engaged in. I hope that I can work on some prepress work. The production staff made a joke, and opened up another typesetting path for readers and friends. Therefore, if there is a reader who is skeptical about the typesetting of this article, it is not necessary to carry out some unnecessary suspicion, but it can be based on the method described in this article, combined with his own practical experience in practice, to find a more suitable for himself. Typesetting, of course, the typesetting method described in this article is believed to be more suitable for beginners who have just worked in prepress.

For readers who are ready to use CorelDRAW for booklet magazine layout, this article does not have any technical premise. It only requires readers to call up the CorelDRAW program from the Windows Start → Programs menu.

When CorelDRAW is opened, a new desktop window similar to Office software such as Word is created. As shown in Figure 1, the difference is just some menu items and tools.

Use the tool tool of the toolbox to click and drag the mouse in any direction in the working window. A rectangle will be drawn in the window. You can change this box in the lower right corner or directly below the box. The size of the mark, use the mouse to press here and then drag in a direction to change the horizontal or vertical size of this box, here we set this box to 170mm x 257mm size (assuming the finished product size is A4 paper size and The four perimeters are each 2 cm), as shown in Figure 2. You can enter text by clicking the left mouse button in this box.

In a normal book or magazine, it is impossible to have only some simple symbols such as words, and we will insert some pictures and other objects according to the needs of different articles or layouts. In CorelDRAW, you can insert foreign images that have been processed by other software, or you can use your own powerful drawing function to create some images to insert. Regardless of the form in which the images were introduced, we have to embed them in the text.

The task of inserting an image into a text is very simple. Just select the image you want to insert and set it in the "Paragraph Text Wrapper" on the Formatting toolbar. In this tool, CorelDRAW provides us with a rich text wrap function, which can surround the image either left or right, or up and down or four sides, as shown in Figure 3.

When inserting images into text, CorelDRAW's good prepress automation has preset the specification of the image and text embedding specifications. Of course, we can also do some self according to the needs of our own or the layout. Defined settings to make the embedding of images and text more aesthetically pleasing or reasonable. Figure 4 shows the effect of inserting a picture into text.

If the text and image content of the book or magazine to be edited are all entered, we need to put the arranged content into the paper to print or copy the printing press on the printing plate. This step is also very simple, we only need to select all the contents of the arranged objects, such as pictures, and then use the alignment tool to align the content to the center of the paper, or to align anywhere on the paper. Figure 5 is an effect diagram of aligning the image to the center of the paper. This method is suitable for the software's default page format to arrange multiple-page continuous versions.

The above-mentioned layout according to CorelDRAW's default method means that only one page of the finished page number is placed on one page. If you want to continue to sort the contents of a page in the same file, you need to add a new page number to place.

In addition to aligning the arranged graphic content with CorelDRAW's default paper center, you can also draw a rectangular frame that matches the actual paper size as a virtual page so that it can be placed on one page. More page content, such as pressing a sheet, can put 16 or 32 page numbers on a page without having to add a new page number.

In the page layout, a large number of objects such as headers and footers are used. In the general typesetting software, there are good items for automatically sorting the headers and footers, but this function is not included in CorelDRAW. However, we can manually place it through the powerful graphics and layout features of this software. At this point, CorelDRAW is slightly less than the software such as PageMaker and QuarkXPress, but this is not to say that CorelDRAW can't do this. On the contrary, sometimes it may be more beautiful.

If you want to arrange the header and footer items on the page, you can first make the header and footer in the blank space next to it, then arrange the header and footer to whatever we want by copying, pasting, arranging and aligning. One location. Figure 8 shows the page rendering with the header and footer added.

2. Precautions during typesetting

In the book typesetting, other layout settings are basically similar to office software such as Word, Jinshan Office, etc., such as paragraph, word and line spacing, font size change, cut copy, etc. movement, alignment, first word sinking , tabs, tables (can make any complex form of newspaper in CorelDRAW, but can not be automatically calculated like professional tabulation software such as Excel, can not automatically generate charts) and so on. All of these operations can basically be done by calling the corresponding function item in the "Text" menu in the menu bar.

After the graphic layout is completed, if it is placed according to the default page format of CorelDRAW, the page number, the binding line and other layout items can be automatically generated in the "print" item, and the page number order can be freely changed; if it is in the same The page surface adopts the virtual page method (that is, the large rectangular frame such as drawing paper to replace the default actual paper of CorelDRAW), and the graphic content is arranged, and some page numbers and the like need to be manually adjusted. Some people may think that manual adjustment is not applicable to multi-page book layout. In fact, this is an extra consideration: First, ordinary printing companies rarely receive thick books to print, but print-based professional printing houses. The typesetting software used is basically Peking University Founder and other software. Compared with widely distributed magazines or similar brochures, the page number is mostly between one and two hundred pages. Second, we can fully utilize CorelDRAW's powerful copying. Paste function to achieve; because CorelDRAW's copy and paste function is very comparable to software, although this "stupid" method is too complicated for hundreds of pages of books, but it also brought us A more free form of page arrangement, in this way we can easily place the page number number anywhere we want without worrying about the positional shift.

Most people who use the typesetting software such as PageMaker, Peking University Founder, and QuarkXPress think that using CorelDRAW to format is too slow. In fact, this is completely a problem of not arranging the number of pages in a file. Compared with the above software, CorelDRAW is a little inconvenient for the speed of files above 50 or 60 pages, but actually puts dozens or even hundreds of pages in one file at the same time, for the post-production staff. It is very troublesome, they have to extract these pages and reschedule them in order to make a printed version. For prints with too many page numbers, we don't have to arrange all the page files in one file. It is possible to adjust the number of pages in the file according to the actual situation at the time of printing. For example, the maximum printing layout of the printing machine can only print 16 pages. Page number, then we can arrange 16 page files into one file, which not only speeds up the speed of file running, but also facilitates the big version to make plates, so that a 300-page book only needs to be done. It’s ok to get twenty files. Although at first glance, I think that there are too many files, it is not as convenient as a document such as PageMaker, but for the plate maker, one file is just a standard printed version of the page, and many plate makers Also like to use CorelDRAW to spell the big version, if you use this grammar, a file is a version, it is very convenient to operate.

There are also many types of typographers who believe that CorelDRAW does not have the convenience of PageMaker when it comes to arranging graphics. This is also a consequence of CorelDRAW. In CorelDRAW, the graphics of the images are only as good as those of CorelDRAW. We can use such as PageMaker. Such a form of link to arrange the pattern (more clearly and more eye-catching than in PageMaker, if you want to achieve this clear effect with PageMaker, the speed advantage of PageMaker will disappear), you can import all the patterns into the file. . Whether or not to use the link selection when importing a pattern can be selected in the dialog box when the pattern is imported.

In the professional typesetting software such as PageMaker and QuarkXPress, there is a "scheduled" function that combines several files into one file. This is a pity in CorelDRAW, which does not bring convenience to our typesetting work. At the same time, it made it difficult for us to arrange the catalogue of the booklet - we must use the manual form to make the book catalog.

The arranged layout file was finally taken out of the film to make a printed version. In the process, many people who had first contacted the typesetting work ignored a serious problem - font compatibility. Except for some large-scale printing factories, most of the printing factories can complete the typesetting work, but rarely do the output work themselves, but send them out to some exporting companies that specialize in output work to produce film films or even print plates. . At this time, when the file is transferred from the enterprise to the output company, the problem of font compatibility has to be considered. If it's just a file of one or two pages, we can convert all the text into a curve, but this method is not suitable for multi-page files; the other method is to dump all files into EPS format files, but this Although the method is good, it may bring some other problems at the same time, and it also increases the physical storage of the file; the best way is to store the default Cdr of CorelDRAW in a bank (such as CD or MO). The file, in addition to the industry-wide Eps file, also copy the font used in the file to the storage, so that after the file is transferred, there is no need to worry about unnecessary trouble due to font compatibility.

At present, some foreign-funded and some large-scale printing enterprises in the Mainland have begun to produce processes such as remote manuscripts, manuscripts, proofing and printing, as well as circulation of documents on the Internet. This requires our production staff to learn the files circulating on the network, html files or PDF files, in addition to the work of typesetting, imposition, and output. Html files are used for page files on the network. The physical storage capacity of the files is required to be as small as possible to facilitate browsing and circulation on the network. These matters can be selected in the Output to Interner item in the File menu. In addition to making Html files for network circulation, sometimes we have to convert the files into another standard file, PDF file, that can be circulated on any operating platform and in any language. This kind of file can be used regardless of the operating system, and it will not pick up the language installed in the system. It can be circulated according to the style we have arranged on the local computer. Precautions for outputting such files can be set and selected in the Publish PDF File function item in the File menu.
