The new national standard for green toy packaging is here

Starting from December 1, 2025, a new national standard closely related to every family with children will officially come into effect - the "Technical Specifications for Green Packaging of Toys and Children's Products."

This new standard will completely change the experience of buying toys for our children: excessive packaging will be restricted, packaging materials must be environmentally friendly, and recyclability will be a mandatory consideration.

01 Standard Content

This technical specification mainly applies to various minimal sales packaging of toys and children's products, including single-use, reusable, and pre-determined retained packaging.

It is worth noting that the standard does not apply to packaging used for storage or transportation, nor does it include packaging for children's food and cosmetics.

The standard sets clear requirements for toy and children's product packaging across four dimensions: environmental friendliness of materials, appropriate packaging, recyclability, and environmental impact throughout the entire lifecycle.

Unlike previous standards that only focused on packaging safety, this new regulation introduces the requirement for "lifecycle environmental impact analysis." This means that companies must assess the environmental impact of packaging throughout the entire process, from raw material acquisition and manufacturing to consumer use and final disposal.

02 Industry Participation

Notably, leading toy brands in the market such as Pop Mart, Alpha Group, Bandai Toys, and LEGO Trading have all participated in drafting the standard.

The deep involvement of these companies means that the new standard has fully considered the industry's practical realities and technological feasibility during its formulation, which is conducive to the smooth implementation and promotion of the standard in the future.

03 Responses

For toy manufacturers and retailers, implementing the new standard means reassessing product packaging strategies. From the packaging design stage, consideration must be given to the environmental friendliness of materials, the appropriateness of quantity, and the convenience of recycling.

LEGO Group has pledged to switch all packaging to sustainable materials by 2025; Pop Mart has also started experimenting with environmentally friendly ink printing for blind box packaging.

In the future, consumers will be able to judge whether a product meets the new standard by the labels on the packaging, the degree of material reduction, and information on the materials used. When choosing toys, parents can start consciously selecting products with simple packaging and eco-friendly materials, actively supporting green packaging while fostering environmental awareness in their children.
