The Science Press was established in August 1954 through the merger of the Compilation and Translation Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Longmen United Press. It mainly involves the publishing fields of science, technology, medicine, education, humanities and social sciences. For many years, it has adhered to the publishing style of "serious, rigorous and strict" and the publishing taste of "high-level, high-level and high-quality".
As a "publisher of scientists", many of the country's top science and technology award winners and academicians have published works or articles in Science Press. Professor Tu Youyou's first article on artemisinin research was published in the third issue of Science Bulletin in 1977, and the representative work of "Father of Hybrid Rice" Yuan Longping - "Male Infertility of Rice" was published in the fourth issue of the Chinese version and the seventh issue of the English version of Science Bulletin in 1966. It can be said that Science Press witnessed and recorded the rapid development of science and technology in New China and the brilliant achievements it has made.
The main business of Science Press is divided into four categories: book publishing, journal publishing, knowledge services, and import and export of publications. It has won various national important honors and has been included in the list of pilot units for digital development and reform in the printing industry.

On the road of promoting on-demand printing, Science Press has made a lot of practice and launched its own production line in June 2015, mainly to meet its own sales order type ultra short version business needs and achieve the POD operation mode of production according to orders as soon as possible. At the same time, when there is a mismatch between business volume and production capacity, take into account the short-term business needs. Through the construction of on-demand printing, the available varieties of Science Press have reached 33000, greatly improving its production efficiency.
Benefiting from the development of on-demand printing and the growth of digital printing business, both print runs and print volumes have shown an upward trend from the 12th Five Year Plan to the 14th Five Year Plan period. In 2017, the digital printing volume of Science Press accounted for 25% of the total printing volume, while the digital printing volume accounted for 29%. In 2022, digital printing will account for 51% of the total printing volume, while digital printing will account for 50%. In 2023, the total production of book printing and packaging will exceed 80000 impressions, of which the proportion of digital printing impressions has exceeded 90%. The application of digital printing and on-demand printing not only shortens the printing cycle of new books, but also greatly enhances the growth and expansion of business.
The Science Press has invested a lot of manpower and material resources in building its own production line. The POD intelligent production management platform has officially obtained software copyright and won the "Digital Publishing Innovation Award" at the 2017 Beijing International Cultural and Creative Industry Expo in China. The Physics Dictionary, produced by Science Press on its own production line, won the gold medal of the 2021 China Printing Award, indicating a steady improvement in the quality of digital printing products.
