Global leading ink company Sun Chemical acquires well-known Indian specialty coatings manufacturer
On March 30, the global leader in coatings and printing inks, Germany's Siegwerk, announced a major acquisition, officially acquiring India's well-known printing ink and specialty coatings manufacturer Hi-Tech Inks.
This move is not only Siegwerk's largest acquisition in nearly twenty years, but it is also regarded by the industry as a key strategy for deepening its presence in India and the Asia-Pacific coatings market, as well as strengthening its advantages in the flexible packaging coatings sector. It is expected to have a profound impact on the competitive landscape of the regional coatings industry.

Supplementing Production Capacity, Expanding Products, and Strengthening Regional Layout
This acquisition covers all core assets of Hi-Tech Inks, including its two major production bases in Bhiwadi and Vapi, India, which can directly fill ShengweiKe's domestic production capacity gap in India and enhance regional operational influence and market responsiveness. At the same time, ShengweiKe's product portfolio is enriched, adding core products such as water-based and solvent-based printing inks, as well as metallic special effect coatings and overprint varnishes (OPV), aligning with the coating industry's trend toward diversification and functional transformation.
As a German century-old family enterprise, ShengweiKe originated in 1824 and focused on gravure ink production in 1911, laying the industry's foundation. Today, it has become a solution provider covering the entire printing process, with services spanning from primers to functional and decorative coatings, and possesses deep technological accumulation in the global coatings and inks sector. This acquisition represents an important step in its India and Asia-Pacific expansion strategy.
Ashish Pradhan, President of ShengweiKe Asia, stated that this acquisition strengthens the company's position in the Indian flexible packaging market, enhancing its ability to serve customers, expand coverage, and innovate. According to disclosures, after the acquisition, ShengweiKe's market share in India's flexible packaging market has exceeded 20%, consolidating its leading position in the industry.
Hi-Tech Inks, a well-known local Indian company, has mature technology and market channels in the field of special coatings. Its Managing Director, Karan Mahajan, said that the two parties share highly compatible concepts in terms of quality and sustainability, and together will create new growth and innovation opportunities.
It is reported that this transaction is ShengweiKe's largest acquisition since acquiring SICPA's packaging ink business in 2005, and it is expected to be completed within a few weeks. Industry analysts believe that after integration, ShengweiKe can leverage Hi-Tech Inks' local strengths to enter India's flexible packaging coatings market. The combined team of 1,700 employees will form a strong talent and technical support base.
Promoting Green Upgrades in the Coatings Industry
The current Indian flexible packaging industry is growing rapidly, with rising demand for high-performance coatings and environmentally friendly solutions. By combining its global technological advantages with Hi-Tech Inks' local experience, ShengweiKe can more efficiently respond to market trends and meet emerging demands for water-based, solvent-based, and special coatings.
This acquisition will also help ShengweiKe further its sustainability strategy. As a promoter of the green transformation in the coatings industry, ShengweiKe is advancing the development of circular solutions through the "rethINK Packaging" initiative, and Hi-Tech Inks' accumulation in environmentally friendly coatings will further strengthen its innovation capabilities, aligning with the global mainstream of low-carbon and environmentally friendly practices.
Senior industry observer Zhao Yu pointed out that ShengweiKe's move into India is not only a key step in its global layout but will also drive the upgrading of India's packaging coatings industry. As global coatings companies accelerate their presence in the Asia-Pacific region, competition in the Indian market is becoming increasingly fierce. This acquisition may trigger more industry mergers and integrations, promoting the regional industry toward scale, high-end, and green development. In the future, ShengweiKe is expected to further expand its influence in the Asia-Pacific market.
