Children's book design is inseparable from the study of children's psychology, and the combination of color, text, pattern and material and form should be studied. It is the primary information for children to contact knowledge, and an excellent children's book binding design is to let children uncover the unique world of books through the fusion of various imaginations and perceptions. Of course, it is not enough to focus only on flat aspects such as color, text and pattern, which must be presented in a new and unique way. That's what I'm going to talk about and design for children's pop-up books, made on a flat surface, using folding or other origami techniques. Love of play is the nature of children, learning is the stage that children must go through, and the combination of play and learning is the focus of research and development of pop-up books. Through the analysis and observation of children's psychological characteristics, it can be found that children have a rich imagination, so only by satisfying children's curiosity and exploration can they feel happy; Only the design of authenticity that breaks the confinement of thinking can attract children's attention more; Children are an extraordinary period for acquiring knowledge, and interaction can stimulate children's initiative in learning and make children more active in learning.
First, get rid of the single, let the different picture accept the curiosity of children
The famous German aesthete Schiller once wrote in his book "A Brief Book of Aesthetic Education": "In the field of interest, even the greatest genius must give up his supreme majesty and lovingly bow down to the childlike heart of children." In his opinion, all creativity must be based on the childlike heart of children. Three-dimensional design is an art, requiring designers not only to highlight the content of the book itself, but also to skillfully use its unique artistic language to show a new visual space, and establish a more figurative aesthetic space for young readers. Curiosity is the first force of interest, that is, with curiosity, children will explore and find out the answers. They like to learn while playing, and children's pop-up books have exactly two functions that can be used to learn and to play. It is both a book and a rich "toy" that arouses children's curiosity. This kind of "toy book" jumps out of the two-dimensional picture and displays it in a three-dimensional form, and children can't help but touch them out of curiosity to enjoy a different picture. The most representative is the British Maurice Plegel's "Find a Friend Series of Magical Pop-up Books"
In the book, children can help Oka the otter to find his little goldfish, and help the bunny Billy to find the beautiful butterfly; Each small animal hides behind a rock or in the grass, and children only need to turn over the stone to find a good friend. The book also has a good bouncing function design, making the small animals in the book more three-dimensional and flexible, every time you open the book, the animals inside seem to jump to the children, increasing children's sense of curiosity. They flipped stones, pulled through the grass, went into deep forests, climbed over mountains, dived underwater... It is precisely because of the curiosity brought by this pop-up book that children are actively involved in the story, and the owner of the story to find what they want. Whenever they really find the animal they are looking for, it will bring a little achievement and joy to young readers, which not only enhances children's sense of awareness and initiative, but also gives them a deep understanding of real things. Satisfying children's curiosity and exploration can make them feel interesting and achieve the purpose of children's book design.
Second, break the thinking and let the three-dimensional picture show the truth of things
Three-dimensional design is different from graphic design, and its charm lies in its authenticity. The so-called three-dimensional nature of books is to have strong intuitiveness and characteristics. Different from the previous traditional book design, it is not limited to
imaginative thinking, but directly displayed in front of people, through the eyes and hands to touch the real feeling. Just like the combination of words and patterns in children's books now, and the inherent flat form can no longer attract children's interest, even if they get rid of the simple patterns of words, if they want to truly let children interpret the content and ideas inside, this requires a certain age and knowledge level. Making the graphics three-dimensional not only increases the authenticity of children's book pictures, but also makes the real picture more attractive to children. Just like when people are tired of the aesthetic monotony of a whole piece of paper, the three-dimensional design gently eliminates fatigue for us and displays it in front of people in a three-dimensional picture, thereby breaking the monotonous aesthetic and revealing the essence of "real" beauty.
In "Alice in Wonderland", created by the famous American paper artist and picture book artist Robert Sabouda, he uses a superb paper cutting and folding design, opens the inner page, and a dining table full of tableware and three hosts are presented in front of you. Let children see at a glance, the protagonist of the story and the scene are presented in front of them, according to the picture, children can play a larger imagination; Another example: my own design of the children's pop-up book "Slipper Sister Search", which uses a variety of colored cardboard and art paper through the precise cutting and folding of cartoon characters, etc., every page is opened, the high-rise buildings, various animals, etc. in the picture will "stand" in front of your eyes, so that the story protagonist Slipper Sister takes younreaders into a fairytale-like real dream, along the way children can follow Slipper Sister to learn more things.
In addition to some special paper, I also use some cloth, cotton, and feathers to decorate the animals I design, so as to increase the texture of the picture and the authenticity of the characters. Children will also have a different feeling to the touch, compared with a single paper two-dimensional book, three-dimensional books not only enhance the authenticity of the visual but also strengthen the authenticity of the touch.
These pop-up books break the conventional thinking and let their real charm attract children's attention. Once children get their hands on the book, they will love it and explore the "real" story in the book with the child's characteristic naïve thoughts.
Third, learning with fun, pop-up books bring children interaction outside the classroom
Three-dimensional children's books are not only interesting in visual form, but also have a proper sense of picture (that is, the visual and tactile sense brought by pop-up books), but also get rid of formalization. When you open the children's pop-up book, a vivid and realistic picture is displayed in front of you, and you can't help but marvel that a children's book can be designed like this. Adults will be impressed by such vivid images, living images and dexterous technology, not to mention innocent children. The use of origami techniques such as superposition and thrusting, and some piston principles, makes the originally stiff and dull picture become "live", like a silent "teacher". Through the meticulous cropping of the picture, vivid, vivid three-dimensional pictures are displayed in front of your eyes, leading you into the ocean of knowledge. For example, the first set of domestic pop-up books, Huang Kejiao's "Moving ABC", adopts a three-dimensional picture book, the book can be interactive, operable, flipped, pulled, pushed, rotated, expanded, closed, extended, spread and other mobile position design.
