At present, CTP technology mainly has two major categories of heat and light, and the debate about the future of thermal CTP and violet laser CTP has not stopped.

An article published in the American Printer magazine last year pointed out that many people now regard thermal sensitivity as an expensive technology designed for high-volume printing. In fact, this is a misunderstanding of thermal CTP.

One of the misunderstandings: thermal CTP is expensive

Violet laser imaging has been described as the most economical method of making digital plates. The article pointed out that this is only based on the price of the purple laser CTP, and does not consider the total cost paid by the user. Just as a car that costs $1,000 is not guaranteed, the future costs (such as petrol, repairs, etc.) are also very low. It is unreasonable to choose CTP based solely on the price of the hardware. Thermal CTP can reduce many processing costs and reduce the overall cost of printing. For example, thermal CTP laser diodes are 100 times cheaper than the cheapest visible laser sources. Thermal CTPs do not require safety lights or darkrooms, reducing installation costs and improving the working environment. In addition, the thermal version is also more reliable than some visible CTP plates, saving on the cost of reprinting a job. Compared with the silver salt CTP plate, the thermal plate printing device requires less maintenance, the life of the thermal diode is longer than that of the visible laser, and the loss caused by the replacement of the laser is small.

Misunderstanding 2: less thermal supplier, and the price of the plate is expensive

In fact, there are more suppliers of thermal plates on the market today than suppliers of the violet laser version. There are only three or four manufacturers of purple lasers, and there are as many as 28 manufacturers of thermal plates. We have reason to believe that the price of thermal plates will continue to drop due to the large number of manufacturers.

Misunderstanding 3: Thermal CTP is only used for large printing houses with long printing

The violet laser is aimed at printers with less printing, but this does not mean that thermal CTP is not suitable for this type of market. Small printing plants lack complete testing methods, and most of them must imitate the mode of purchasing large CTPs by large units, and it is difficult to make their own decision to choose CTP. They can choose either the violet laser CTP (because it is described as almost as good as thermal) or the thermal CTP. According to some surveys, more than 10% of the installed CTPs are left idle. Considering that most CTP devices are installed less than five years ago, it is shocking that 10% of CTPs are idle. Obviously, some printers buy outdated, poorly performing or expensive CTP systems that are difficult to function in production and have no resale value. Thermal CTP systems have the advantage of being scalable and easy to resell. The data shows that the sales of thermal CTP plates are 50% higher than that of visible light plates, and the sales ratio of thermal CTP to violet laser CTP is 3:1.

Misunderstanding 4: Purple laser CTP is the same quality as thermal CTP

Thermal square dot technology allows for FM random screening in production environments. Random screening has many advantages. The most interesting thing is that the color printed by random screening is rarely affected by the color of paper, which means that you can use less bleached paper and recycled paper or cheap paper and cardboard printing. . The thermal CTP has a spot diameter as small as 10μm and can print extremely high quality fine prints. Thermal CTP provides superior process control and accelerated printing preparation without the need to make excessive adjustments to the press. In general, thermal CTP provides consistent quality, bright colors and clear dots. Thermal CTP is a smart choice for printers who want to increase productivity and win in the fierce competition.
