The concept of "network printing" was actually proposed by Hewlett-Packard Company 10 years ago, and they also started the initial network printer development work. However, because the price of the first generation of network printers at that time was very expensive, before the 21st century, China's network printing market did not really flourish.

However, with the development and popularization of network technology in recent years, the figure of the network can be said to be everywhere. Not only are the traditional printers plugged into the network more fully utilized, but the network printers that have sprung up are also emerging. Especially in recent years, with the decrease of its price and the popularity of enterprise LAN, network printers have stepped into various enterprises and institutions and become an indispensable member of office equipment.

Since network printing is a new technology that has only appeared in recent years, there are still many people who have only a rough impression on network printing. For this reason, the author gives a brief introduction to the market group, principle, classification and advantages of network printers. Leave a preliminary impression.

Market group and market role of network printing

According to the different requirements of network printing work, domestic small and medium office users can be divided into two categories. The first category is an office environment with less than 20 PCs. Taking into account the overall level of office equipment performance, flexible use of network printers at a more affordable price, to achieve work efficiency, is the most practical. The second category is users at departmental level. At the same time of achieving high-speed, high-quality printing, it is also crucial to reduce the total cost of ownership according to the nature and workload of its daily processing.

The advantage of the dot matrix printer is that it is suitable for some special industries in China, such as telecommunications, finance, transportation, etc., and the requirements for printing media are not high. The advantage of inkjet printers is that they get color output at a relatively low price and are constantly accepted by home users. However, as an output device for office use, laser printers have undoubtedly great advantages. From the perspective of technology and market prospects, the position of laser printers is irreplaceable. In addition, in order to protect the office working environment, the low noise and low pollution of laser printers are also advocated by green office.

The principle and classification of network printing

At present, there are three main types of network printing services that are popular on the market: host printing implementation, implementation through an external print server, and implementation through a built-in print server. In addition, network printing through a wireless print server is also emerging.

Host printing implementation

This is the most common type of print server we use. It works by configuring a PC connected directly to the printer as a print server. The printer is set up as a shared device so that users on the network can connect to the computer. , sharing the printing device of the computer. Obviously, this kind of print server is operated by a computer directly connected to the printer.

Shared printing via PC is the most basic level of network printing. Network printing is not a simple "share a printer". Sharing with a PC is actually not a real network printing. Although shared printing is the most widely used method for network printing in the original application environment, and this traditional method is still used in many environments, there are many drawbacks to this approach.

Implemented by an external print server

The external print server is to make the built-in print server into a single device. In these external print server devices, there is one (or more) network interfaces for connecting to the network, and one (or one) is also provided. Above) printer interface, some of these interfaces are parallel interface LTP, and some are USB interfaces. Through these interfaces, the printer can be connected to the external print server, so that the network printer can also be used as a network node, which can be directly accessed by network users without going through any computer (as shown in Figure 1).

External servers are more compatible because their interfaces are generic, so a print server is basically suitable for all brands of network printers. This kind of print server is also technically difficult. At present, many brands (some even not originally a printer brand) have started the development of external print servers. And the current use of peripheral print servers to achieve network printing is still popular, mainly due to its good compatibility and low price. External print servers are much cheaper than built-in print servers in terms of price, and they are more flexible to use. However, its performance is not as good as the built-in print server. In large and medium-sized enterprises, the built-in print server is still the main one. With the continuous development of technology and its versatility, external print servers will be more suitable for low-end network printing environments.

Implemented through a built-in print server

When office users demanded higher and higher network transmission speeds, network laser printers with built-in network cards came into being. The network printer with built-in network card is directly connected to the network through the network card, and its data transmission speed is fast, which can be consistent with the network, reaching 10Mb or even 100Mb per second. Generally, high-speed network printers use this method to realize network printing. This network card used on the printer is called the built-in print server (as shown in Figure 2). The built-in print server can be directly inserted into the motherboard I/O slot of the printer. Through the network interface on the interface card, the printer can be directly connected to the network node, and users on the network can directly access the network printer without having to Through the computer.

Implemented by a wireless print server

There is also a new type of print server, the wireless print server. This kind of wireless print server also has built-in and external points. Their structure is of course similar to that of the corresponding built-in or external print server. It only adds wireless connection function, and connects the print server to the printer without cable, which is convenient for the printer. Moving, it also saves the trouble of wiring (as shown in Figure 3). The most common type of wireless printing is connected via infrared. Since many devices, including laptops, handhelds, and PDAs, including mobile phones, electronic organizers, portable scanners, and digital cameras, have infrared transmission ports, it means This type of connection enables a more general printout of mobile devices.
