Due to the widespread use of the Macintosh operating system in the printing field, this paper discusses in detail the pre-press production area, especially for the data transfer between Microsoft Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

Causes

The Macintosh operating system has been playing a major role in the printing field since its inception. New technologies such as DTP and CTP in various printing fields are inextricably linked with the Apple operating system. With the Apple operating system version from 7.X to 8.X, and the OS 9.22 we use today, and the OSX based on the UNIX FreeBSD kernel launched last year, we can see that the Apple operating system has become very strong and stable. At the same time, a variety of excellent application software is endless. It is said that by October last year, the number of applications built on the OSX system has reached 8,500. For typesetting software, such as Adobe, Mecromedia, ArtworkSystem and other professional image graphics development companies, support for the Apple operating system is no more than spare.

The Microsoft Windows operating system has an open hardware system and a graphical user interface, so it is only natural that it has achieved great success. The success of the IT industry can also be said to be a huge success of Microsoft's Windows system, and Microsoft's Windows operating system will certainly get his share of the cake in the printing field.

Of course, there are other kinds of operating systems, such as various variants of UNIX, IBM's OS/2, etc., we will not discuss here.

In this way, in our prepress production field, there must be a local area network composed of various operating systems, which brings certain problems to the computer operating system to transfer files and data to each other. The operating system is a communication protocol based on the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model designed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Therefore, the specific design of the communication protocol between different operating systems is different, but he It is based on the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI).

For the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system, the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) communication protocol has become the default installation protocol. As the universal language of network communication, TCP/IP has become a necessary protocol for all network computer systems with the popularity of the Internet. At the same time, there is also an AppleTalk protocol in Windows2000 Professional. You can't expect to download files through the Macintosh operating system, but he can drive PS (PostScript) printers in the Apple domain.

The Macintosh operating system uses the AppleTalk protocol. This is a communication protocol developed by Apple itself, so it is not open. In Macintosh operating systems such as 9.X, we also found the TCP/IP protocol. After the TCP/IP protocol is activated, the web browser can also find the Apple computer on the LAN. But if you want to find a cross-platform host in the LAN right through the MAC adapter or the Microsoft Windows online neighbor, you will definitely get nothing.

Comparison of different programs

Different languages communicate with each other in three ways. First, the language of A learns B and then communicates with B; second, the language of B learns A and then communicates with A; three, A and B learn a common language and then communicate with each other. In fact, the solution to the problem of transferring data between different operating systems is also the principle.

Option 1, install application software to transfer data on Microsoft Windows system.

The most famous is PCMACLan. Looking at the name, we can know that he is a networking software for PC and MAC.

Principle: Add two protocols to the network adapter to use Appletalk for Macintosh systems for data transfer.

Installation and use of PCMACLAN 8.1.

After the software installation is completed, the Miramar AppleTalk Protocol and the Miramar Systems AppleTalk Client Service protocol can be bound to the network card to transfer data.

Comment: PCMACLan usage rights are only available to Windows Professional 2000 members who belong to the Administrators group. The software itself often fixes some errors, resulting in junk files. The software has many functions and is widely used.

Recommended environment: a small amount of PC, a large number of MAC.

Option 2, install application software to transfer data in the Macintosh operating system

The software is developed by Thursby Software Systems, DAVE and SOHO. DAVE uses the NETBT (NETBIOS Over TCP/IP) protocol (NETBIOS is the network basic input/output system), while SOHO uses the NETBEUI (NetBIOS Enhanced User Interface NetBIOS Enhanced User Interface) protocol.

DAVE software

Principle: Data transmission is performed by installing the NETBT communication protocol on the Macintosh operating system and properly configuring the Windows operating system with the TCP/IP communication protocol.

Comment: DAVE is very powerful and has a lot of options. It is said that the printer can be shared between Apple and PC. I have not tried it. At the same time, Chinese characters can be displayed for versions such as 4.02. After the installation is complete, you can browse all Windows computers that are properly configured with the TCP/IP protocol. However, there is some conflict with the Adobe PS Driver printer. After finding the printer, you cannot select the PPD file to configure it.

SOHO software

Principle: Data transmission is performed by installing the NETBEU industrial communication protocol on the Macintosh operating system and the Windows operating system installed with the NETBEUI communication protocol.

Comment: Like his name, SOHO is ideal for home or small business LANs. The NETBEUI communication protocol is also very common, the installation process is simple, the networking operation is clear, and the configuration is very convenient. At the same time, he does not support routing, and allows up to 1-200 sites in a network segment.

Recommended environment: a large number of PCs, a small number of MAC.

Option 3, use the Macintosh service in the server software

Principle: Install the Macintosh service on the NT Server 4.0 system, and create the volume of the Apple computer through the file manager.

Open the network properties of the NT Server 4.0 operating system to add, and you can set the permissions of the shared directory, the function is very complete, the performance is very stable. I use this scheme to back up files.

Comment: For Macintosh, the NT SERVER file server is like an AppleShare Filing Protocol (AFP) server. For PCs, NT Server is like a PC web server. NT Server manages file names, icons and access rights for PC and Macintosh clients. Mac and PC can use the same data file, which is transparent to the user for the specific environment.

Note: Volumes used as Macfiles must be created on hard disk partitions in NTFS format. Recommended environment: a large number of PCs, a large number of MAC environments.

(Attachment: For the Novell Netware Server operating system, also install the Macintosh file service in the network, create a management Macfile volume in the file manager, and share the volume to the PC on the network to transfer the data between the PC and the MAC file. The principle is the same as the NT Server operating system).

Option 4: FTP server setup

Rationale: FTP is a member of the TCP/IP family and is designed to allow remote connections, list files and directories, and move files between computers. FTP supports a wide range of file type formats, including ASCII, EBDIC, and binary files. FTP allows FTP clients to transfer to the FTP server and also allows the server to transfer downloads to the client.

The installation process of the FTP server.

Install the FTP server on the Windows 2000 Profes-sional operating system

Open Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Internet Service Manager to configure the properties of the FTP site.

On MacOS9. Fetch 4.02 is installed on X, which is a tool for FTP clients.

Log in by entering the correct username and password.

Comment: FTP service is available on Macintosh systems or Windows, and there are many tools for clients. The browser we use (such as IE or Netscape) is also available. Usually we often use them to access the FTP server on the Internet.

Recommended environment: a large number of PCs in the LAN, a large number of MAC.

Option 5: Through the computer connection line

Principle: The USB link is another option for file transfer between platforms at this stage.

Product: Compliant with USB specification version 1.1, single cable solution for fast transfer of file data with a transfer speed of up to 6Mbits per second. User-friendly window control drag and drop control interface.

Comment: By connecting to the USB port of Direct-LinQ, in addition to files, you can quickly transfer files between different platforms of Mac and PC (or Mac and Mac or PC and the same platform), and enjoy USB plug and play. The convenience of use. At the same time, it is easy to operate, with fewer settings, and it is easy to help you achieve the file transfer requirements.

Recommended environment: a small amount of PC, a small amount of MAC, short transmission distance.

Option 6: Transfer data through storage media

Principle: Although the operating system is different but uses the same media, copy the data to the media on the Macintosh operating system, and then read the data on the media on the Windows system.

Installation and use: The media is roughly divided into the following categories: MO disk, CD disk, ZIP disk, 1.44M floppy disk, USB flash drive. Format the media into a format that can be recognized by both the Macintosh system and the Windows system: MO disk, ZIP disk, 1.44M floppy disk, USB flash drive formatted as FAT16 file format, CD-ROM format IS0966, or cross-platform file reading software. For example, DOS mount software is installed on Macopen, MacDriver2000, or Macintosh systems on Windows systems to transfer files.

Comment: Because it is a different file format, you must convert the file format of the media or install the software to read the media that allows the operating system to read different file formats. At the same time, the same media reader must be available on different operating systems. It is complicated to operate and wastes media and time.

Recommended environment: The computer does not form a LAN and the hardware is relatively complete, such as the operating environment of the MO machine or CD burner or ZIP drive.

Option 7: Transfer data by email

Principle: Using POP3 and SMTP protocols, install and send email software, such as Microsoft Outlook Express, on the operating system. Of course, some domestic software such as FoxMail is also quite good. Through dial-up Internet access, or broadband Internet access such as ISDN, ADSL, FTTB, etc. to achieve data transmission.

Installation process: The Windows operating system has been bundled with Outlook Express software. Macintosh version of the software interface and settings interface.

Comment: Today, with the rapid development of the Internet, CTP and CTD technologies are maturing today. The transmission of documents and materials through the Internet will certainly be recognized by everyone in the near future.

Applicable environment: Mac and PC remotely transfer file data.

Afterword

The solution implementation environment is Window 2000 Professional, OS 9.22 operating system-based, and Ethernet topology, 10/100M adaptive LAN, unshielded Category 5 twisted pair, G4 Apple and P4 PC.

At the same time, with the efforts of Apple engineers, the OSX10.2 operating system has enabled us to directly access the shared directory of the Windows 2000 operating system through the TCP/IP communication protocol. As we use the online neighbors on Windows to get Apple's shared data, Data transfer between platforms is easier, so we can say goodbye to these annoying scenarios.
