Interactive colors: pop-up books

Pop-up books can interact with readers. For children, interaction means play. I strongly believe that learning should start with the game.
  David? Carter
As a picture book author who works as a graphic illustrator, I have only been paying attention to pop-up books for nearly two years. Ever since an old classmate of mine opened an independent pop-up bookstore and publishing studio (Chirps & Mews, Shanghai), I found the field so vast and interesting.
I think you have seen stereoscopic cards for a long time, so what is a pop-up book?
Pop-up books are a type of activity book. Its origins date back to the 13th century, when Benedictine monks added paper wheels to scriptures to count holy days. Later, the medical community used cascading patterns to demonstrate anatomy, and movable pages were sometimes found in astrology and architectural works. A Compleat Treatise on Perspective, published in 1775, was the first commercially published 3D pop-up book by Thomas Francis. Thomas Malton created movable mechanisms such as geometry and tie rods that stood upright on paper to help readers understand the principles of perspective. And the real modern pop-up book appeared in the 30s of the 20th century, by Louis? A collection of children's books published by Louis Giraud that can be enjoyed in 360°.
From the 60s to the present, pop-up books have made a leap in technology and art, and a large number of exquisite works have emerged. For example, Matthew? Star Wars: A Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy by Matthew Reinhart, Robert Reinhart, Robert Reinhart Robert Sabuda's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Andy Smith. Andy Warhol's Catalogue, etc.
Contemporary pop-up books are illustrated and paper craftsmen work with paper craftsmen to cut, fold, and fix to create paper structures that can pop, stand, rotate, stretch and even make sounds, providing children and adults with rich sensory experiences.
Special introduction to David here? David A. Carter – The godfather of contemporary pop-up books.

Born in Salt Lake City, USA in the 50s, he spent his early years in graphic design and advertising illustration. Since the 80s, as an artist and paper craftsman, he has devoted himself to the creation of children's pop-up books. Over the past two decades, his wife (also a paper craftsman) has published more than ninety books, and the Bugs series alone has sold more than 6 million copies.
I particularly admire his series of abstract pop-up books in recent years, namely One Red Dot, Yellow Square, Blue 2, White Noise, and 600 Black Spots. Leaving behind the dizzying complexity of technique and storytelling, he washes away the lead in this series and returns to the visual arts itself. Each book is dominated by a primary color, and seemingly simple geometric shapes are always displayed in unexpected ways. Turning the pages, it is as if you see Piet Cornelies Mondrian's abstract paintings and Alexander's paintings. Alexander Calder's kinetic sculptures are full of modern composition.
Black, white, red, yellow, blue, too strong and simple color collision is not always beautiful, often gives people a hard feeling. But David? Carter handled it with ease. On pages dominated by one or two solid colors, he is amazed by its structure, marveling at its purity and the subtlety of its design. When multiple solid colors appear on the page at the same time, he reasonably arranges the master-slave relationship of the color by cutting the contrast of the area, resulting in a cheerful jump but orderly effect.
David? Carter also created a very practical textbook for pop-up book enthusiasts, "Elements of pop-up." In this book, Carter unreservedly explains for readers various production principles and paper craft techniques, from the simplest symmetrical 90° folding, to asymmetrical 180° folding, to cubes, cylinders, spirals, to a variety of complex, irregular shapes, as well as changing colors or shapes by tie rods, relying on gear friction to make paper sound... The biggest advantage of this reference book is that it can be fully expanded, and the secrets hidden in the fold that are usually invisible are spread out for you to study.
In the domestic publishing industry, the category of pop-up books is still blank for the time being. China does not lack manufacturing technology, and even many foreign pop-up books are printed in China; What is lacking is a bold publishing house, but also unique ideas, dexterous hands, and experience. Hoping to see China's original, high-quality three-dimensional writing as soon as possible, we need pioneers like Chirps & Mews.
Opened in 2013, Chirps & Mews is the country's first pop-up bookstore, café and Western restaurant. Located at No. 1513 Xinzha Road, Jing'an District, Shanghai, Chirps & Mews Pop-up Bookstore is one of the few pop-up book-themed coffee restaurants in China, converted from a 1924 French Concession Xinli Lane bungalow, with a red English-style shop door in a gray building and green trees. The outer body of the 2nd and 3rd floors forms the B letter of a huge Book. The store offers a wealth of original imported pop-up books, suitable for picture books of all ages.
