The next step in the setup process is to apply ink to the printing unit. The following steps detail the inking process of a common printing unit.

1. Check the color in the ink container repeatedly to verify that the ink is to be placed in the color of the printer.

2. The ink in the ink pump is circulated through the ink supply hose and flows back into the ink pump to remove system air.

3. If an ink fountain is used, the ink fountain should be aligned and the compression device locked. Make sure the ink fountain does not rub against the end of any roller or the surface of the plate cylinder.

4. If the ink fountain is used for ink return, it is necessary to correct the alignment and lock the pressing device. Be sure to let the hose bypass all moving parts. When using water-based inks, the ink return hose must be immersed in the ink of the pumping unit to a certain depth, so that it is ribbed to avoid foaming.

5. The ink supply hose of the ink pump is connected to the ink distribution system to pump the ink into the dispensing system.

6. After using the ink pump to transport the ink for a period of time, measure the viscosity (pH and viscosity for water-based inks) to ensure the correct working parameters of the ink. If the ink's operating parameters are incorrect, the ink should be adjusted and re-inspected to meet the technical requirements before the press begins.
