How to maintain the "heart" of the flexographic printing machine? Keep these details in mind!

Perfect flexo printing relies on high-precision analox rollers, whose precise ink transfer ensures image gradation and gradation, making prints appear vividly colored, clear, and lifelike. Moreover, the use of anilox rollers also gives flexo printing excellent color stability. Therefore, many industry insiders refer to the anilox roller as the "heart" of flexo printing machines. For label printing companies, to ensure the quality of flexographic printing, it is essential to first properly maintain and care the anilox rollers. Common anilox rollers are usually chrome-plated and ceramic. The following will focus on the maintenance and care of ceramic anilox rollers.

Precautions for use

Before starting the flexo printing machine, operators need to carefully check the condition of the ceramic anilox roll to ensure smooth subsequent production.

(1) Check whether the surface of the ceramic anilox roller has any "scratches." If a large "scratch" has appeared on the surface of the ceramic anilox roller, it must be stopped from use; otherwise, this "scratch" effect will rapidly expand, causing damage to the ink bucket roller and the printing plate, ultimately affecting the quality of the printed product. It should be noted that when replacing ceramic anilox rollers, operators should avoid oil stains on their hands that could cause contamination, as the presence of oil stains affects the ink storage and transfer performance of the cavity. At the same time, operators should also be careful to avoid metal objects like zippers or belts that may damage the mesh holes.

(2) Check whether any debris is attached to the drive gear between the ceramic anilox roller and the ink bucket roller, and apply a small amount of gear lubricant. This can improve the phenomenon of anilox roller bounce caused by debris, enhance ink transfer stability, and reduce the probability of ink bars appearing on printed products.

In actual production, it is necessary to avoid friction between the ceramic anilox roller and the ink bucket roller or squeegee when dry, ensuring the pressure between the ink bucket roller and the ceramic anilox roller or the squeegee knife and the ceramic anilox roller is minimized. Excessive pressure accelerates wear on the anilox roller and also causes uneven axial ink transfer on the roller. The ink scraping blades should be replaced regularly, because after long-term use, the blades wear out, which can damage the ceramic anilox roller during ink scraping. Additionally, the hardness of the ink scraping blade and the length of the cutting edge also affect the lifespan of the ceramic anilox roller; Additionally, when replacing old and new ink scraper blades, attention should be paid to adjusting the pressure and angle of the blades to prevent scratching the ceramic anilox rollers.

Cleaning work

Cleaning of ceramic anilox rollers is generally divided into two categories: daily cleaning and regular cleaning.

Daily cleaning refers to operators promptly cleaning the ceramic anilox rollers when changing workpieces, generally wiping with a cloth and a special brush combined with powder and cleaning agents. After shutdown, operators must clean the ceramic anilox roller immediately to prevent ink from drying out in the mesh cavity.

Regular cleaning refers to using specialized cleaning equipment to perform deep and comprehensive cleaning of ceramic anilox rollers to compensate for the shortcomings of daily cleaning. Common cleaning methods for regular cleaning include chemical rinsing, particle spraying, and ultrasonic cleaning. It is especially important to note that after using the particle spraying method, a brush and cleaning agent are needed to clean the ceramic anilox roller with fine particles.

Daily or regular cleaning can cause wear to the mesh holes of the anilox rollers. Therefore, after each regular cleaning, the BCM value of the ceramic anilox roller should be remeasured and recorded, so that the ink transfer status of the ceramic anilox roller should be monitored at all times to facilitate selection during printing.

Storage of anilox rollers

Ceramic anilox rollers have specific storage environment requirements and should be stored indoors in a dry place, protected from direct rain and sunlight. If storing ceramic anilox rollers in wooden boxes, first wrap the roller surface with natural fiber wrapping paper or leather before placing it; If not stored in wooden boxes, the surface of the ceramic anilox roller should be wrapped in wrapping paper or leather, placed on a dedicated stand, and the surfaces of the ceramic anilox rollers placed on the two layers of support must not touch each other. It is strictly forbidden to tilt the ceramic anilox roller upright on the ground, as this can easily slip off and damage the ceramic coating on the surface of the roller.

When handling ceramic anilox rollers, operators should hold the shafts on both sides; For long-distance handling of ceramic anilox rollers, a cart should be used to avoid damage or dropping caused by human intervention.

Although label printing companies need to spend time and effort maintaining ceramic anilox rollers, only by doing these tasks seriously can they extend their service life, ensure the quality of flexo printing products, and achieve twice the result with half the effort.
