There Are 51 Enterprises in Yibin, Sichuan That Use Bamboo Instead Of Plastic, With An Annual Output Of 910000 Tons Of Bamboo Pulp Paper (plastic)

As one of the areas with the richest bamboo resources in China, Yibin City in Sichuan Province actively implements the global initiative of "replacing plastic with bamboo" and continues to promote the high-quality development of the bamboo industry. The reporter learned from the 2025 promotion event of China Environmental Protection Century Tour that Yibin has gathered 51 "bamboo instead of plastic" enterprises, with a production capacity of 910000 tons of bamboo pulp paper (plastic).
Currently, white pollution has become a prominent problem threatening the global environment. Bamboo, a green, low-carbon, fast-growing, renewable, and biodegradable biomass material, is an ideal substitute for plastics. In November 2022, the Chinese government and the International Bamboo and Vine Organization jointly launched the "Replacing Plastic with Bamboo" initiative to reduce plastic pollution and address climate change. In November 2023, the Chinese government and the International Bamboo and Vine Organization jointly released the "Replacing Plastic with Bamboo" global action plan.

Yibin City is located at the confluence of the Yangtze River, Minjiang River, and Jinsha River, and is one of the areas with the richest bamboo resources in China. It currently has a bamboo forest area of 3.34 million mu and 485 bamboo species, making it the core of the "Chuannan Bamboo Industry Cluster".
Li Bingjie, the director of Yibin Bamboo Culture Museum, introduced that bamboo is renewable, fast-growing, strong in carbon sequestration, and biodegradable. The energy consumption and carbon emissions of bamboo products are much lower than those of plastic, making it the "chosen material" to replace plastic.
Bamboo has a strong carbon sequestration ability. The data shows that the carbon sequestration capacity of bamboo forests far exceeds that of ordinary trees, which is 1.46 times that of Chinese fir and 1.33 times that of tropical rainforests.

In 2024, the comprehensive output value of Yibin's bamboo industry will reach 42.8 billion yuan, continuing to maintain the first place in the province. In recent years, Yibin has vigorously promoted large-scale management, operated and managed bamboo forests according to high-yield cultivation techniques, and established specialized logging teams to avoid disorderly logging. At present, Yibin has implemented large-scale management of 600000 acres of bamboo forests and built a modern bamboo industry base of 1.2 million acres.
Zheng Renhong stated that currently, the development of Yibin's bamboo industry mainly focuses on two directions. One is to develop and produce products using bamboo pulp as raw material, including bamboo pulp molding, automotive interior materials, and bamboo based Lyocell fiber as clothing fabric; Secondly, in the field of bamboo food, based on the common bamboo shoot products in the past, baked goods, noodles, and even bamboo shoot rice are developed using bamboo shoot powder or bamboo shoot paste as raw materials.
At present, Yibin has introduced 21 enterprises in the field of "replacing plastic with bamboo" such as Yutong Technology, Xiangtai Environmental Protection, and Zhejiang Jinsheng, mainly using pulp as raw material to produce industrial and food packaging materials. There are 51 "bamboo instead of plastic" enterprises in the city, with a production capacity of 910000 tons of bamboo pulp paper (plastic), including 430000 tons of bamboo pulp board, 370000 tons of paper products, and 110000 tons of bamboo pulp molding capacity. By 2024, the output value (revenue) will reach nearly 7 billion yuan.
In the research and development of "replacing plastic with bamboo" technology, Yibin Bamboo Industry Research Institute and Chengdu Chongqing Bamboo Industry Collaborative Innovation Center were established, with an investment of 200 million yuan to build a scientific research and experimental building and officially operate. Inviting Academician Cao Fuliang to serve as the Director of the Academic Committee, and hiring four well-known experts in the fields of bamboo pulp papermaking and "replacing plastic with bamboo", including Fang Guigan, to form a core technology research team. In collaboration with leading enterprises such as Yibin Paper Industry and Yutong Environmental Protection, the team will focus on the development of bamboo pulp preparation technology and products using bamboo as a substitute for plastic.
In order to expand the application scenarios of "replacing plastic with bamboo", Yibin has carried out the "five entry" activities of "replacing plastic with bamboo" products into government agencies, supermarkets, street scenes, industries, and rural areas; Enterprises in industries such as hotels, catering, express logistics, and food production in the city actively use "bamboo instead of plastic" products.

Zheng Renhong pointed out that due to the significantly higher cost of "replacing plastic with bamboo" products compared to plastic, it is difficult to rely solely on social forces to promote them. Therefore, Yibin has included "replacing plastic with bamboo" products such as furniture, paper pens, paper cups, etc. in the government procurement catalog, which will be demonstrated and driven by party and government organs. In situations where the price is the same or even slightly higher, "replacing plastic with bamboo" products will be given priority.
At the level of policy protection, the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Yibin City has issued a decision to accelerate the promotion of "replacing plastic with bamboo", and the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Xingwen County has issued a decision to strengthen the control of plastic pollution and comprehensively ban the use of plastic products; At the same time, the Yibin Municipal Party Committee and Government have also issued an implementation plan to comprehensively promote the high-quality development of the bamboo industry by replacing plastic with bamboo.
Zheng Renhong stated that the working mechanism of legislative supervision by the National People's Congress, government implementation, and coordinated promotion by city level departments and county (district) provides a solid policy guarantee for the development of the "bamboo instead of plastic" industry in Yibin City, which is conducive to making the concept of "bamboo instead of plastic" more deeply rooted in people's hearts.
