Metpack and BASF collaborate to launch home compost coated paper for food packaging
Recently, Metpack launched Ezycompost, a coated paper and cardboard made from BASF Ecovio 70 PS14H6 household compostable polymer for food packaging.

Ezycompost, as a food packaging paper, has added multiple functions: certified food contact (FDA); Exhibiting excellent specific barrier properties for liquids, fats, oils, and mineral oils; Capable of exhibiting high temperature stability in boiling water up to 100 ° C.

This certified compostability and other excellent performance combination gives paper packaging manufacturers and food brands confidence that consumers can use food packaging products made from Ezycompost with peace of mind and will not produce persistent microplastics in home compost after use.

Therefore, this new type of household composting solution can be organically recycled along with food waste and help form a closed-loop nutrition chain to achieve a circular economy.

Metpack's new compostable coated paper can be used for many food contact applications, such as cold or hot drink cups, as well as deep freezing or microwave pots and trays. It can be produced on a standard molding line, with faster coating speed and a 40% reduction in coating thickness compared to polylactic acid (PLA). ecovio ® The speed of the 70 PS14H6 film production line can be comparable to that of polyethylene (PE). This material does not adhere to cooling rollers, has excellent sealing and printing properties, and can be processed through single extrusion or co extrusion without the use of adhesives.

S ü han G ü rer, Vice President of Sales and New Project Development at Metpack, stated:

Through Ezycompost, we can provide the food industry with products that combine multiple excellent properties in the field of laminated paper packaging. It has the same strength as polyethylene coated paper, but adds the advantage of being certified compostable, and does not produce persistent microplastics during organic or paper scrap processes. Compared with PLA film that can only be composted industrially, its faster processing speed and home compostability are dual advantages. These advantages enable food packaging industry customers who choose our products to stand out and achieve their sustainable development goals without compromising performance and quality. "Verified, Metpack's paper solution has a total weight of up to 334 grams per square meter (gsm).

Michael Bernhard Schick, Global Marketing Head of BASF Biopolymer Team, said:

Our Ecovio ® 70 PS14H6 can also be used for industrial composting and performs well in paper recycling. Its home compostability has even been certified by the Australian standard AS 5810, which is internationally recognized as a rigorous standard. According to ASTM D 6866 standard, the biobased content of our biopolymers is between 70-80%, which is a renewable resource. If the customer wishes to further reduce the carbon footprint (PCF) of the product, we can also provide biomass balanced (BMB) grades: at the beginning of production, 100% of its fossil raw materials are replaced by waste based renewable resources, so PCF is more efficient than standard ecovio ® The grade is 25% lower.
