Canon enters digital label printing

According to a report by the German printing media on June 6, 2018, Canon introduced its first UV inkjet label printer with the Oce’ Labelstream 4000 and dared to venture into the label and packaging market. The new printing system was jointly developed by Oce’s/Canon, FFEI and Edale. The machine will be supplied in two different tape widths and two speed modes - according to the manufacturer, it can be expanded into a fully integrated digital hybrid press.

Canon's new .Oce’ Labelstream 4000 label printer exhibited a hybrid configuration in its first release featuring cold foil units and semi-rotary die cutting.

The new Oce’ Labelstream 4000 not only operates as a stand-alone roll-to-roll system, but also as a printing system that includes on-line finishing (for example, with half-rotational cross-cutting). In addition, during the further expansion phase, Oce’ Labelstream 4000 can be expanded with flexo units, flip units, cold foil stations, glazing or compound units. Here are just a few possibilities. This allows the aircraft to adapt flexibly and modularly to the different needs of the company.

The internal flexibility of the machine will also continue. Two different tape widths are available - 330 mm and 410 mm - and different printing speeds, 48 m/min and 68 m/min. Therefore, the machine's production efficiency can reach 950 to 1672 m2 / hour.

In addition to the CMYK 4-color UV ink, the machine also uses white ink. At standard speeds, this ink has an opacity of over 80% in one pass. In order to find a balance between the cost and quality of the application, the user can select white ink between the two modes: positive white and snow white.

The Xaar-2001-UV printhead with grayscale technology is used for inkjet printing. The printhead has a resolution of 720 x 600 dpi at 3 gray levels and a variable drop size. This can display a larger color space than the Gracol (G7) data standard, and is also larger than the electrophotographic color space in many locations.

Canon aims at new markets

For possible printing substrates, the new UV inkjet label printer can not only process coated paper, but it can also print uncoated paper, white or transparent films, PP, PE, PVC, and POPP. Therefore, Oce’ Labelstream 4000 can be used for a variety of different purposes in different markets, such as cosmetics, beverages, alcohol, industry, medicine, or promotions, just to name a few. The machine was developed specifically for label printing, but it can also be used for special applications in flexible packaging.

The Canon Oce’ Labelstream 4000 machine is ready for use at the end of the year.
