British cities lead the take-away packaging recycling campaign

British environmental agency Hubbub and Ecosurety have established a partnership to improve the “on-the-go” recycling of food and beverage packaging in Leeds, UK.

LeedsByExample plans to start a trial in September for six months, combining new technologies, increased recycling facilities and networking activities.

The program is supported by many plastics, retail and consumer giants, including supermarket chains, British Plastics Association, Coca-Cola, Kl?ckner Pentaplast (kp), PepsiCo and Shell.

The organizers of the event said in a statement issued on June 25 that they would support on-the-go garbage recycling activities by providing better infrastructure.

According to the statement, young people between the ages of 18 and 25 are twice as likely to buy a takeaway as the older generation, but are less likely to recycle the packaging.

Although the annual output value of the take-away industry has reached 17.4 billion pounds (20 billion euros), it is expected to increase to 23 billion pounds (26 billion euros) by 2021, but a recent study found that only 42% of local governments provide A facility for the recycling of takeaway packaging.

LeedsByExample plans to add new recycling facilities in public spaces, including streets, local offices, shopping centers, universities and transportation hubs.

As part of the program, OPRL has developed a mobile app. The app will use packaged barcodes to help people understand what recycling is, how to recycle it, and find the closest recycling point through the map.

57% of people in Leeds are between the ages of 16 and 24. This app is an element of the event and is designed to appeal to young people.

The population of Leeds is growing and the average weekly passenger flow is 1.3 million.

Gabu Ellis, director and co-founder of Hubbub, said: "We will provide recycling bins, communication support and advice, and hope that any interested Leeds companies can participate."
