In the spring of April, the Hong Kong printing industry is more happy. Because the long-awaited AsiaWorld-Expo was completed at the new airport, the first large-scale printing exhibition was held. Because the Hong Kong-based specification project published the first edition of the Hong Kong Ping Zhang Offset Printing Technical Data Manual, Hong Kong Printing set a new milestone in the road to standardization. Because Mr. Don Hutcheson, the president of the US GRACoL, has worked tirelessly to hold a number of lectures, the industry is enthusiastically concerned about the current printing productivity battlefield – establishing printing process specifications.
Standardization and productivity go hand in hand
Looking back at the long history, the improvement of productivity has never been separated from the establishment of standard specifications. The ancient Chinese nation has created a splendid agricultural civilization by means of unity, quantity, balance, unified writing and management of the legal system. In modern Europe, an endless stream of creative inventions followed by product standards, from screws to bullets, from rails to containers, made industrial civilization spread all over the world. Entering the information civilized society, it is more familiar with the standard of hegemony, from video tape to DVD, from WiFi to 3G standards, who establish standards means high level of productivity. “First-class enterprises establish standards, second-tier enterprises create brands, and third-rate enterprises manufacture products” to visually interpret the status of standard specifications. The printing industry shoulders the heavy responsibility of information dissemination and has always actively established industry specifications. In 1975, SWOP first established the American roll-type printing specifications; in 1984, SNAP established various printing specifications for American newspapers; in 1996, GRACoL established the North American flat-panel printing specifications, making the printing productivity of the United States soaring and global. The establishment of JNC for ISO/TC130 in Japan, the establishment of FOGRA in Germany, and the establishment of the China Printing Standardization Technical Committee are actually in response to the needs of the development of the productivity of printing countries.
Hong Kong's offset printing specifications are the product of the times
The Hong Kong printing industry, located in the "World Factory" Pearl River Delta, is at the forefront of global print transfer, with print exports growing at double digits each year. However, the Hong Kong industry has not established its own specifications, passively adapting to different specifications from Europe, the United States and Japan. In response to the needs of the times, the social engineering “Hong Kong Offset Printing Specification Project”, which lasted nearly three years, collected more than 2,000 data and analyzed with the participation of printing companies, equipment, paper, ink suppliers and large printing buyers. After finishing, it was confirmed by 10 typical printing companies that the first version of Hong Kong's printing characteristics data was finally released. The printing specifications can help the buyer and the seller to establish a communication bridge, which not only gives the buyer a design and production reference specification, but also gives himself a printing quality control specification. More importantly, when Europe, the United States, and Japan are unifying the world's printing standards, Hong Kong, as the world's fourth printing center, has provided its own data in a timely manner to make the world's standards more perfect. The ICC curve produced by the Hong Kong specification is in fact very close to the GRACoL 7 curve, which is conducive to the complement and improvement of the ISO 12647-2 world standard.
Printing specifications will reduce the cost of the code
In the capital-intensive and technology-intensive printing industry, the production process has undergone tremendous changes under the IT revolutionary storm. Digitization makes professional electric and traditional tracing and micro-color management fly into the homes of ordinary people. Photoshop becomes the main tool for color separation. The author intends to investigate the publishing, design, and export companies, and found that most operators do not pay attention to the complex conversion parameters of the color space to the color space. I have also selected in customer documents such as anti-white characters. Print, black line selection line, PDF no bleeding, RGB coloring, etc. are in trouble. The printing house has done cost accounting and understands that the printing fee must be calculated from 5,000 to 8,000 lithographers. This is because the printing has lost about 5,000 printers in half an hour. The file is not standardized, the end of the version should be red and red, the middle tone is not enough color, and the deep position is already inked. If the document has the correct color specification, reduce the coloring for 15 minutes, and reduce the 150 sheets of the proof paper, the future version will generate considerable profits.
The “Hong Kong Ping Zhang Ke Technical Information Manual” has detailed specifications for pre-press production, color management, printing process and material characteristics. However, limited to manpower and material resources, the first version will inevitably have shortcomings. As long as the Hong Kong industry works together, it will eventually establish a spacious avenue leading to Rome. We would like to thank Heidelberg, Midas, X-Rite and EPSON for their long-term support for the establishment of support specifications and the sponsorship of the printing specification standardization seminar.
