Digital workflow is an indispensable part of the networked printing environment. Without digital workflow, CTP digital proofing and networked printing have no basis for implementation. The combination of perfect digital workflow and advanced equipment and management will enable enterprises to enhance their competitiveness and improve product quality and efficiency.
The key to a digital workflow is the realization of graphic information, production control information, and smooth communication throughout the workflow. The core is a unified working format throughout the entire process. The devices of different types and functions are connected into one overall coordinated operation, and the integration of graphic information flow, production control information flow and non-technical management information flow is realized. PPF and JDF, implemented by CIP3 and CIP4, are two device-independent standard formats that serve this role.

In order to broadly adapt to the requirements of the main parties such as print publishing, e-commerce, automation and computer integrated manufacturing, CIP3 extended CIP4 and announced the JDF work definition format based on PIP of CIP3 and PJIF of Adobe. JDF integrates e-commerce and production management into a digital workflow to achieve a large-scale integration from business to management to production.
JDF was developed jointly by Adobe, Agfa, Heidelberg and Manroland and handed over to the CIP organization. In April 2001, CIP announced JDF Version 1.0, the latest version of 1.1 was released in April 2002. JDF uses extensible language XML to compose reality. Its data structure is also a tree node structure. It inherits the advantages of PPF and PJTF, and overcomes the limitations of PPF itself. It combines many different standards or scales to become a more effective and better solution to lay the foundation for the future development of digital workflow.
The emergence of JDF laid the foundation for the development of the printing industry, and will definitely bring a new revolution to the printing industry. Many experts have already called the upcoming Drupa 2004 print exhibition "JDF Drupa". JDF is in the midst of an unprecedented period of time and will accelerate the integration of the various stages of the automation process into a continuous production process.
