The Mystery of RFID Tag Prices: How Technology, Applications, and Costs Shape the Final Price?
Many companies are very concerned about the price of an RFID tag, but the price of RFID tags is affected by various factors such as material, size, frequency, chip type, manufacturing process, and purchase quantity, making it impossible to provide a unified unit price. Below, the author will analyze the price range and influencing factors based on common market conditions, hoping to help everyone.
01
Label types and operating frequencies
According to operating frequency, RFID tags are generally divided into four categories: low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), ultra-high frequency (UHF), and microwave. Due to different technical parameters and application scenarios, their prices naturally vary.
(1) Low frequency (LF, 125 - 134 kHz): usually expensive, mostly used for animal tracking, access cards, and similar scenarios, with prices ranging from a few yuan to over ten yuan.
(2) High frequency (HF, 13.56 MHz): The most widely used, covering NFC, library management, payment cards, access cards, and other fields. The price range is wide, with simple cards or tags as low as 0.5 to 2 yuan, while those with encryption, special sizes, or performance requirements may reach several or even over ten yuan.
(3) Ultra-High Frequency (UHF, 860 - 960 MHz): Mainly used in logistics, warehousing, retail, and asset management. Due to its long reading distance and ability to read in bulk, it is currently the fastest-growing and most competitive field in terms of price.
(4) Microwave (2.45GHz, 5.8GHz, etc.): Extremely long reading distance (ranging from tens to hundreds of meters), high cost, mostly used for active tags, such as long-distance vehicle identification.
For example, the most basic ordinary paper/synthetic material labels (used for retail apparel tags and logistics box labels) can be priced as low as 0.2~0.8 yuan or even lower in large quantities; Metal-resistant labels (used for attaching metal surfaces) have significantly increased in price, usually around 1.5~10 yuan or even higher, depending on size, material, and performance; High-temperature resistant labels and special material labels (such as ceramics, PCBs) are even more expensive, ranging from a few yuan to several dozen yuan.
02
Chip performance and capacity
One of the most important components of RFID tags is the chip, whose storage size, performance, and model all affect the price.
(1) Storage space: Available in 96-bit, 512-bit, 4K, 8K and other specifications.
(2) Encryption features: Whether encryption is supported (such as Gen2v2 security features) directly affects the price.
(3) Chip brands and models: such as Impinj, NXP, Alien, Huahong, etc. RFID tags for high-performance or high-security chips are more expensive.
03
Packaging materials and forms
Different packaging materials and methods also result in different prices for the final RFID tags. Specifically:
(1) Materials: including ordinary paper, synthetic paper, PET, PVC, ABS plastics, epoxy resin, ceramics, etc. The higher the requirements for weather resistance, tear resistance, high-temperature resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance, the higher the price.
(2) Forms: Standard sticker labels, cards, buttons, laundry labels, implantable glass tube labels, cable tie labels, hang tags, anti-metal labels, etc. Special packaging forms increase costs.
(3) Size: Generally, the smaller the size or the need for a special shape, the higher the cost.
04
Scenario requirements and procurement quantities
Faced with special requirements for certain application scenarios, such as longer reading distances, high temperature resistance (used for automotive tire tracking, laundry industry), low temperature resistance, waterproofing, chemical corrosion resistance, UV protection, and anti-interference properties, RFID tag costs are also invisibly increased.
In addition, the quantity purchased is also an important factor affecting price, and RFID tag prices are extremely sensitive to quantity. Generally, samples/small batches (dozens to hundreds) RFID tags have very high unit prices, possibly several times or even more than those for bulk purchases; Medium batch (several thousand to tens of thousands) have significantly lower unit prices. Large-batch (over 100,000 pieces) tags can fetch the lowest unit price, while ultra-high-frequency tags can keep costs very low for ultra-large batches (such as millions of pieces).
In fact, different suppliers have varying production costs, quality control, and brand premiums, which also affect the final tag price. In addition, the cost of RFID projects includes not only the tag itself but also readers, antennas, middleware, software systems, integration services, and more. Tag costs may not account for a large proportion in large projects, but they are crucial in retail single-product applications. Therefore, it is recommended to consider and choose based on your own needs and budget.
