The only inkjet printing ink used in the past was a water-based ink. It is our only choice. However, with the increasing number of digital printing factories on the market, the ink systems that are now available for us are also diversified. Jeff Burton's "The Latest Trends in Digital Ink" helps print buyers analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each ink system and understand the characteristics of these ink systems to recognize the current core trends in digital inks.

Every printing company has its own development goals, and they must use existing technology to meet the current customer's production requirements while taking into account the future development of the market. So in many cases, the ink – not the printing house itself – has become an important factor in motivating people to make decisions.

Water-based inks are used by more and more printing companies to print indoor jobs

Water based inks are generally formulated based on dyes and pigments. They have a life span of several days to a month and need to be used in conjunction with specialized coated inkjet substrates. This type of substrate mainly relies on the coating to absorb the ink, so the price is relatively expensive, but the price of the water-based ink is relatively cheap, and there is no subsequent processing problem. The color gamut that water-based inks can replicate is the largest of all ink systems. Nowadays, more and more printing companies have begun to produce their own indoor work with water-based printing solutions.

Solvent-based inks are the most used ink systems in the inkjet printing market.

Solvent-based inks are primarily pigmented by penetration into the surface of the substrate. They are primarily developed for ethylene products and are the most used ink systems on the inkjet printing market. Solvent-based inks provide users with a longer life without the need for a film, but they require heating during printing and drying. True solvent-based inks contain VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and require the printing plant to take ventilation and other air treatments. In general, the sales prospects for solvent-based inks are very optimistic, except for some areas where air quality requirements are more stringent.

Environmentally friendly or low solvent inks are inexpensive and VOC free, eliminating the need for air handling

Environmentally friendly or low solvent inks can be used on coated or uncoated substrates. When they are printing on a coated substrate, they can control the dot enlargement themselves; when they are printed on a non-coated substrate, a heater/dryer is required to control the dot gain. Environmentally friendly or low solvent inks are less expensive than true solvent based inks and are VOC free, eliminating the need for air handling. The life of this ink is similar to that of solvent-based inks, and users can extend their durability by laminating.

Eco-ink has its own world in the field of digital printing

Eco-inks using ethyl lactate are still an emerging technology to date, and their raw materials are mainly derived from crops such as corn. Eco-inks require the heater and dryer to be set to higher temperatures during printing. This ink is considered a green product because of the solvent extracted from plants rather than petroleum solvents. If the UV ink does not beat it before it goes on the market, then it will definitely be able to find its own world in the field of digital printing.

Sublimation ink continues to grow in the niche printing market

For textile and apparel printing companies, sublimation inks are a good choice. This basic ink technology has not changed in recent years. When using such inks, they are first printed on a transfer paper, and then the ink is converted from a solid to a gas by heat and pressure, and allowed to penetrate into the fibers of the textile.

As the niche printing market continues to heat up, the use of sublimation inks will continue to grow. UV ink will enter the field of body advertising and banner printing

UV inks have been in the process of development and change, and more and more printers are beginning to adopt new UV digital printing inks. When UV-curable inks were first introduced to the market, they had certain problems in terms of fragility, adhesion and curability. But with the advent of new UV inks, all problems have been solved. The new products offer higher tack and greater flexibility to meet the needs of roll-to-roll printers, and they have made significant advances in color gamut and ink formulation diversity over previous products. The new UV inks, also known as "cationic UV inks", use cold UV light curing technology to dry instantly without waiting for 24 hours. In the days to come, these inks will enter the digital printing market dominated by solvent-based inks, especially in the field of body advertising and banner printing.
