Almost no one in the label printing industry can avoid the problem of color difference. What seems like a minor color deviation can at best lead to customer returns and rework rectification, or at worst directly lose long-term cooperation orders. Therefore, deeply cultivating color difference control and tackling color difference issues is a required course for all printing enterprises and frontline operators.

Many people mistakenly think that color difference is just "inaccurate color grading," but that's not the case. There are often two typical scenarios where color differences appear in printed products: first, the entire batch of colors is uniform but does not match the standard sample; Second, the colors of the same batch are chaotic, with no regular pattern of correct or incorrect colors. The causes of the two are completely different, and the approaches to solving them are worlds apart.

Part 01

The entire batch is uniform in color, but does not match the standard sample

This type of color difference is the most common issue in production. Its root cause does not lie in real-time operation, but rather in pre-stage stages such as early docking, material substrate, equipment parameters, and sample inspection standards. Specifically:

Sample signing and communication were inadequate

Common situations can be divided into two types: first, discommunication between color graders and machine operators, resulting in incorrect parameter transmission; Second, the sample signing stage before mass production was not strictly controlled. When sample parts were confirmed to have deviations, they blindly started mass production, ultimately causing color differences across the entire batch.

The substrate material and model vary

Different manufacturers and batches of substrates have varying performance differences. In normal production, if substrates are mixed, even if the ink amount, hue, and pressure parameters are exactly the same, the final color effect will be completely different, resulting in a color difference clearly visible to the naked eye.

It is generally recommended that products from the same production batch use the same batch of base material to eliminate color differences from the source.

Printing pressure is insufficient or uneven

Stable printing pressure is the core prerequisite for balanced transfer and firm adhesion of ink and water. If the printing pressure is insufficient or the pressure distribution is uneven, the thickness of the ink transfer will deviate, directly causing imbalance in the final ink color and overall color shift. These issues not only cause color differences but also easily lead to quality issues such as sticky and plate-based stickers in printed materials.

Observe the light source and angle error

The human eye relies heavily on ambient light to judge colors; the type of light source, color temperature, and subtle changes in viewing angle can greatly interfere with color judgment. Many factories mistakenly judge qualified products as having color difference defects or missing minor color shifts due to lack of standard sample light sources or operator viewing angles, leading to shipment disputes.

The colors of the same batch are chaotic, sometimes right and sometimes wrong, with no pattern

Such color differences are often caused by irregular operations during production, abnormal equipment status, or unstable dynamic parameters. Specifically:

Ink and water are unbalanced, blindly adjusting the machine for mass production

Some operators rushed to mass produce after seeing the first few sample-printed finished samples with matching colors. At this time, the equipment's ink system had not yet reached a stable equilibrium state. Subsequent production frequently fine-tuned water and ink levels, making adjustments while producing simultaneously, directly breaking the ink-water balance closed loop, causing the entire batch of products to have varying depths and light, chaotic and irregular color differences.

Printing speed is unstable, with large fluctuations in speed

During production, fluctuating speeds can continuously disrupt the stability of the entire ink system, resulting in varying ink adhesion effects on each finished product, which is visually reflected in inconsistent color depth and chaotic color differences. It can be said that uniform speed printing is the foundation for stable color quality in bulk.

Equipment maintenance is lacking, and machine conditions are abnormal

Long-term neglect of machine maintenance will inevitably lead to various color display issues. Issues such as clogging of the screen roller, residual ink dirt on the roller surface, fluctuations in printing pressure, and aging of equipment components can directly interfere with the normal transfer and uniform adhesion of ink, causing batch color difference defects. This is also the core reason why many factories have long-term frequent color differences that are difficult to eradicate.

Color difference control focuses on closed-loop details

Printing color variation has never been a single issue; it is a comprehensive problem involving materials, equipment, operations, standards, and personnel communication. To completely eliminate color difference issues and improve product pass rates and customer satisfaction, it is not enough to rely solely on "temporary color matching remedies," but to establish a full-process control system: such as controlling material quality and unifying base material standards; Regularly maintain equipment to ensure stable machine operation; Standardize operating procedures to eliminate blind machine adjustment and variable speed production; Standardize sample signing and inspection standards to avoid human judgment errors; Refine personnel coordination processes and break down communication barriers.
