The importance of proofing is unquestionable. If there is no proofing, even the advertisement can't be done, and the proofing makes the printing effect of the newspaper in full control. It is a well-known key link in the printing industry. Of course, it is not only used for advertising, but also for checking the correct matching of titles and drawings, and also helps to ensure that the matching and imposition are correct. However, in the pursuit of efficient newspaper production, it may not be perfect, then how to balance? Proofing is a comprehensive solution to ensure quality.

Proofing hell

We often find mistakes when the time is most urgent. For example, when everyone thinks that they are done, maybe \ someone will find a hole in the product of an advertisement, or the debate between Bush and Gore is a photo of Ru Paul's visit to Madonna.

There are even times when no one notices that something has gone wrong - at least until the first version is available, so that editors or readers have to find misplaced charts or missing headlines.

So how do you avoid mistakes when the only person who can fix or find the error is missing? PDF (Adobe's Portable File Format) can help you solve problems:

Proofing paradise

The beauty of using a PDF file is that it maintains the integrity of the file from beginning to end. Since it was built at the design stage, it can be used as the final proof.

Designers can create PDF files, such as Quark Xpress and PhotoShop, from any software they are familiar with. All the elements of the color profile and the word can be embedded in the PDF file.

In Adobe's terminology, PDF refers to a file that is purified by purifying the PS file. Although they retain all the rich information of the PS file, they are only one of the components of the PS file and remain "open". This means that PDF files are small enough for fast newspaper network transmissions and can be modified anytime, anywhere.

Color profile files can be embedded at any step of the workflow, so changing the press is no longer an issue. Thanks to the application of color management software that simulates the color of the printing on the screen, the PDF file becomes a near-perfect "soft proofing" that can be checked via the Internet.

The PDF format also guarantees the integrity of the page, so editors can edit the page from anywhere via the Internet.

Back to reality

PDF simplifies the process and eliminates opportunities for error. However, the final color acceptance of the advertisement still needs to be based on newsprint. We will have to stick to the traditional printing steps until one day we can make the designer understand the correct interpretation of soft proofing.

The production department of USA Today will really start the press to create proofs for advertisers, show customers what they can do, and let customers decide whether or not to advertise this ad.

Their approach is very effective because customers can see the actual printing results in the future.

If you can make a proof in a non-printing way, how good it is! Inkjet proofing came into being.

Predictable color

Today's inkjet systems have all the factors needed to simulate a process color. You can print on newsprint, you can make rose netting, and with advanced color management tools can help you accurately match colors.

Ideally, the color proofing of the inner page should be as good as the ad proofing, which means that a high-speed inkjet system must be chosen.

Hardware...

There are two types of inkjet technology - continuous inkjet and drop-on-demand. Continuous inkjet ejects ink continuously without interruption; inkjet on demand is inkjet as needed, which is much faster than continuous inkjet.

On-demand inkjet has the distinction of thermal inkjet and micropiezoelectric. Although the thermal spray technique is faster, it has a number of disadvantages, because direct heating of the ink causes one or several colors to change, and also produces larger, more inconsistent droplets. The ink used in the piezoelectric principle has a strong viscosity and is easier to control.

Paper conveying systems are another important factor. If the paper moves in a deviation, the printer cannot copy the exact screen. There is also speed to consider. The high-speed print engine can output a 36-inch sample in 10 minutes at 720 dpi resolution.

Software...

The main benefit of printing rose netting is predictable and eliminates moiré, which requires the printer to have halftone dot copying. A 720 dpi printer produces enough grayscale, but with the appropriate screen technology to produce accurate mesh angles under 100 lines.

Accurate color reproduction is closely related to color management software rather than printers. The best color management should have a flexible color profile, which means that in addition to the default ICC file, you can customize or edit the characterization file to match the color characteristics of a particular web press and on the display. And the printer can be accurately displayed.
