After graduating from the Mural Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Li Runhang continued his studies in the Illustration Department of Camberville College, University of the Arts London. A Tale of Two Cities, his graduation work during Lunyi's graduate studies, is an almost entirely handmade pop-up book. "It is named because it comes from my experiences studying and living in London and Beijing, as well as the cultural imprints I found in both places. It is actually very interesting to see these two cities as foreign cultural experts. Coincidentally, in the second month of the two-year course abroad, we had to formulate the theme of the graduation project, so I decided on this theme. ”

Li Yunhang's profession at that time was illustration, and if he used it to make a group of works or a picture book, of course, there was no problem, but it seemed to be a cliché. Thinking of this, he planned to go to the bookstore in the city and look at the current picture books abroad to find inspiration. And this idea led him to meet "Alice in Wonderland" - the masterpiece of the American pop-up book god Robert Sabuta. "Seeing such a thick book in the children's book picture book area, I am still strange, when I open it, it is so gorgeous! Later, after understanding, it was found that pop-up books have long been a mature branch in the foreign picture book industry, and they have also begun to rise in China. It may be that he was born to like handmade and various materials, and the combination of cultural contrast and three-dimensional paper art was born. Recalling the first intimate contact with pop-up books, Li Runhang's eyes still shone brightly. For beginners, it is still quite difficult to make relatively mature three-dimensional paper art works in two years: "I used to think that only a structure that opens 180 degrees can be regarded as the foundation of a pop-up book, but in fact, even a simple, single three-dimensional structure contains many calculations and measurements. Coupled with the subsequent painting on the basis of the establishment of the structure, the limitations and challenges are like dancing in handcuffs and leg irons. What's more interesting is that at that time, I thought, wouldn't it be beautiful to use what I learned in undergraduate to add to graduate works, and pass on the torch? That's why A Tale of Two Cities has a quirky double cover – a semi-handmade Chinese wire cover and an all-handmade European woodcarved cover. The variety of production challenges is really addictive. ”
