For colorful digital prints, post-press processing is an "essential" and "icing on the cake" "God operation"!

Therefore, professional "printing people" will definitely consider post-press processing when designing in pre-press!

Today, Xiaobian shares how to deal with post-press processing and common post-press processing methods when sharing pre-press design.

Consider post-press processing from prepress design

For digital prints, the quality of the prepress design has a great impact on the post-press processing. Therefore, when pre-press design of digital prints, the influence of the post-press process on the prints should be considered.

01 paper thread direction

Digital printing paper has a small format, limited specifications, and a large number of printed products are single-sided printing. In addition to requiring the pre-press design to make the most efficient use of paper, the direction of the paper should also be considered. Whenever possible, try to match the direction of the silk of the paper with the direction of the back of the finished book. Since the digitally printed ink and toner adhere only to the surface of the paper, if the sheet is folded in the direction of the cross thread, the image is liable to break at the fold.

02 image position on the sheet

Often, many digital prints design images in the middle of a sheet, but when printed and post-press processed, it is found that doing so wastes a lot of time and money. For example, an image measuring 15 cm x 23 cm is designed in the middle of a sheet of 22 cm x 28 cm. When cutting, the four sides of the sheet need to be cut, but if the image is placed on a corner, It only needs to cut both sides, which saves the post-press processing time and reduces the printing cost.

However, if the other two sides of the image are bleeding designs, you will still need to crop all four sides of the sheet.

03 consider post-press processing

When digital printing is designed in prepress, it is also necessary to consider what kind of finishing process is used.

For example, in the wireless binding process, the following two items should be noted:

1 Due to the particularity of the digital printing process, the toner on the surface of the printed matter will affect the adhesion of the hot melt adhesive. Therefore, it is recommended that the design is blank within 1 cm around the spine;

2 The flatness of the wireless adhesive book is poor. Especially when using high-quantity paper, it is not easy to flip through the book after binding. Please pay attention to setting the core size so as not to affect the normal reading.

If the punching process is used, since the drill pin will generate heat when punching, it is easy to cause the digital printed image toner to melt, so it is best to avoid designing images and text at the drilling position.

Common post-press processing

Only by carefully designing and arranging the work pieces from the beginning can we ensure the harmony between printing and post-press processing. In digital post-press processing, the following points should be noted.

01 fold

Since the ink and the color material on the digital printed matter adhere only to the surface of the paper, the folding process is likely to be broken. Therefore, it is best to press the crease before the folding process.

02 film

The film can improve the grade of the product, and can protect the printed matter to avoid the phenomenon that the toner is scratched and peeled off due to the friction of the toner. The digitally printed ink layer contains silicone oil, and the adhesive does not normally penetrate the ink layer. Immediately after printing, the film is likely to generate bubbles, and the printed matter is placed for a period of time before being coated.

For the type of film, digital prints are suitable for hot film coating. In addition, the chemical composition of the colorant is not compatible with many types of film materials, and quality problems may occur, so attention should be paid to the use of the film material and the colorant. If the film can not achieve 100% transparency, the film may affect the color reproduction of the printed matter, so it is best to let the customer confirm that it meets the requirements before processing, and then formally produce.

03 saddle stitching

For most digital prints, saddle stitching is a good choice, especially for the binding of thin books such as guide books, brochures and brochures. The binding method is economical and can be carried out online with other processing methods, and can be used for post-pressing of folding, folding, binding and machine cutting at the same time, which can guarantee the fast delivery required for digital printing.

04 flat order

When designing a book, first of all, pay attention to leave enough room for binding between the book and the text. In order to clarify the specific location of the processing, it is best for the designer to understand the changes of the actual printed paper after digital printing before the digital printing process, which is especially important for digital printing.

Most computer design programs do not take into account small changes in the thickness of the printed paper. In digital printing, the color printed on the surface of the paper causes a change in the thickness of the printed sheet. When binding dozens of pages of printed printed sheets, the cumulative thickness Changes may make the size of the binding calculated by the computer meaningless.

Therefore, it is necessary to grasp the sample variation parameters of the actual production paper after digital printing, in order to accurately measure the thickness of the book during the printing design, and to ensure a suitable binding size for the post-press processing.

05 wireless adhesive binding

As with offset-based wireless adhesive bonding, the wireless adhesive binding of digital prints also takes into account the amount of stapled cut. In addition to leaving a margin of about 1/8 of the width of the back of the book, the other 3 sides of the book should also have a cutting amount of about 1/8 of the width.

In addition, a 1/4 coat of width should be left in the lower part of the book cover to prevent the glue from seeping into the next book during the binding process. Wireless adhesive bonding also requires printing a bleeding cover that is larger than the size of the text.

06 wireless adhesive binding hardcover

Wireless adhesive finishing is an important post-press processing method in digital printing and binding. The key to the hardcover process is how to firmly bond the book block to the hard book case to produce a book that can be stored for a long time.

Although the cost and time required for wireless adhesive finishing seems to be somewhat incompatible with digital printing for the short-run printing market, some post-press binding companies have prefabricated the different colors, styles and differences commonly used in digital printing hardcover. The size of the hardcover book case is available for customers to choose, so wireless adhesive binding hardcover has become a common binding method for digital prints.
