Recently, I saw in the newspaper that the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, gave a speech at the Chinese University on Leadership – Change and Innovation. At that time, she mentioned the journey of the Secretary for Home Affairs, working for 7 million people in Hong Kong every day, working hard for the future development of Hong Kong. The policy set must be for the long-term interests of Hong Kong. This is a responsible approach. It will not only please some Members and enjoy short-term applause! Unfortunately, most of the media, some members of the public and Members of this Council have strongly criticized and praised this Government. It really makes her depressed and helpless. If she is not in the spirit of "not working, but serving in people", it is really difficult to take up this position.


Hong Kong is a very democratic and free speech society. Anyone or organization can make speeches and criticisms. Things will have many different views at different angles. They may often be inconsistent with the facts. Hong Kong people increasingly need to have clear facts and reading wisdom. Otherwise, It is easy to be misled and generate populism, leading to a day-to-day dispute in society, failure to reach consensus and development stagnation and even riots.


As a leader, we need to change in a big era or a corrupted organization. We need innovation and reform. We must have great courage and determination. But if we change, we must face many personnel problems. We must have a lot of impacts with our vested interests. Friction, slander and smearing, gathering the same party to provoke the public, issuing plausible remarks, affecting the credibility of the ruling party, confusing the audience, seeking to overthrow the change and demanding that the leader step down.


As a business consideration, the mass media has been sensational and biased, and it has caused social instability, affecting the ruling party and leading credibility. Therefore, as a leader, it has ideals, is forward-looking, dares to innovate and change, and does not exceed ordinary people's ability and endurance. In the end, it will only be defeated. In fact, leaders who dare to innovate have very low chances of success under the objective conditions of today's society.


For a government, a group and a company to have healthy development, it must have long-term goals and objectives. It should be appropriately adjusted in response to changes in the times and keep pace with the times. At the same time, the society and the public must have a consensus before they can develop. Back in the business environment, the industry is fiercely competitive. In the past, successful companies make money every year. The bigger they get bigger, the more they may be a big burden today. Time shift is easy, regardless of the industry's business environment, technology, technology and talents, all are changing, the past successful model, today has the opportunity to become a fatal cause of death, business leaders must have insight into changing wisdom, decisive, breaking the spirit of new and accepting Change, and thus innovation, the process will be quite arduous. It is necessary to communicate and guide with the company's employees, and overcome difficulties together. In fact, change and innovation are extremely challenging for leaders. As government officials, political and public figures, failures are lost to personal political life. When business leaders innovate or fail to change, they lose the life of the whole company. As the saying goes, leaders There are many people who are lonely and helpless, but after success, they bring about a stable and prosperous society in the future or a new development space after the enterprise is re-established.
