How to Maintain the 'Heart' of a Flexographic Press? Remember These Details!

Perfect flexography relies on high-precision anilox rollers. Their accurate ink transfer capabilities ensure tonal gradation in images, making prints look vibrant, clear, and realistic. Moreover, using anilox rollers gives flexographic prints good color stability. That's why many industry insiders call the anilox roller the 'heart' of a flexo press. For label printing companies, to ensure flexo quality, it's crucial to properly maintain and care for anilox rollers. Common anilox rollers include chrome-plated and ceramic types. Here, we'll focus on maintaining and caring for ceramic anilox rollers.

01

Usage Tips

Before starting the flexo press, operators need to check the condition of the ceramic anilox roller to ensure smooth production.

(1) Check if the ceramic anilox roller surface has any 'scars.' If there are large 'scars,' stop using it immediately, as these will quickly worsen, damaging the ink fountain roller and the plate, and ultimately affecting print quality. One thing to note is that when replacing ceramic anilox rollers, operators should avoid contaminating them with oil on their hands, as oil affects the ink-holding and transfer properties of the cells. Operators should also avoid metal items like zippers and belts on their body from scratching the cells.

(2) Check the drive gears between the ceramic anilox roller and the ink fountain roller for debris, and apply a small amount of gear lubricant. This helps reduce roller irregularities caused by debris, improves ink transfer stability, and lowers the chances of ink streaks on prints.

In actual production, avoid friction between the ceramic anilox roller and the ink fountain roller or doctor blade when dry, and ensure minimal pressure between the ink fountain roller and ceramic anilox roller, or the doctor blade and ceramic anilox roller. Excessive pressure causes faster wear and uneven axial ink transfer. Doctor blades should be replaced regularly because they wear out over time, damaging the ceramic anilox roller. The hardness and edge length of the blade also affect roller lifespan. Also, when replacing blades, adjust pressure and angle carefully to avoid scratching the ceramic anilox roller.

Cleaning

Cleaning of ceramic anilox rollers includes daily and periodic cleaning.

Daily cleaning involves operators cleaning the roller promptly when replacing parts, usually with cloths, specialized brushes, powder, or cleaning solutions. After stopping the press, clean the ceramic anilox roller immediately to prevent ink from drying inside the cells.

Periodic cleaning uses specialized cleaning equipment to deeply and thoroughly clean the roller, compensating for limitations of daily cleaning. Common methods include chemical flushing, micro-abrasive blasting, and ultrasonic cleaning. After micro-abrasive blasting, use brushes and cleaning agents to further clean residues.

Cleaning causes wear to the roller cells. Therefore, after each periodic cleaning, measure the roller's BCM (Billion Cubic Microns) value and record it to monitor ink transfer status, helping in print selection.

Storing Anilox Rollers

Ceramic anilox rollers need proper storage conditions. Store them indoors in a dry place, avoiding direct rain or sunlight. If stored in wooden boxes, wrap the roller surface with natural fiber paper or leather before placing it inside. If not using a box, still wrap the surface and place the roller on dedicated racks, ensuring rollers on top and bottom don't touch each other. Never place rollers upright directly on the ground, as they can slip and damage the ceramic coating.

When handling, hold both ends of the roller. For long distances, use a cart to avoid bumps or drops.

Although label printing companies need to invest time and effort in maintaining ceramic anilox rollers, careful maintenance can extend the roller's lifespan, ensure flexo print quality, and achieve better results with less effort. ...
