Frequent Issues with Cold Foil? 9 Common Problems Solved Once and for All!
In the actual production of label flexographic cold foil stamping, various factors like equipment settings, material quality, substrate properties, and operational procedures can easily cause all kinds of stamping quality issues. These directly affect the appearance, adhesion, and durability of labels, leading to rework or scrapping, and increasing production costs. To accurately tackle production problems and stabilize product quality, here's a compilation of common cold foil issues, their main causes, and standard solutions, so production staff can quickly troubleshoot and make precise corrections.
Cold Foil Not Transferring Consistently
This issue mostly comes from insufficient hardness of the laminating roller or too-low lamination pressure. In production, use a roller with higher hardness and slightly increase lamination pressure to improve foil transfer.
Cold Foil Pattern Missing in Regular Areas
Causes usually include an uneven or damaged laminating roller surface, or dirty/damaged plates or anilox rolls. You can adjust or replace the laminating roller, increase lamination pressure, and clean or replace damaged plates or anilox rolls.
Plate Smearing
The main causes are too much adhesive applied or insufficient hardness of the laminating roller. Replace with a suitable anilox roll, reduce adhesive amount, and replace the roller with a harder one.
Cold Foil Not Transferring at All
This happens when the adhesive is of poor quality, expired, or the substrate surface energy is too low. Check the adhesive's shelf life and replace it if necessary; for the substrate, apply corona treatment to improve surface energy.
Adhesive Not Sticking to Substrate
Usually due to low UV lamp power, preventing the adhesive from fully curing. Increase the UV lamp power and, if needed, add a corona treatment step for the substrate.
Cracking on Stamped Patterns
Excess tension when unwinding/rewinding the foil, or sticking between foil and laminating roller, can cause cracks. Adjust foil tension and clean or replace the laminating roller if damaged.
Jagged Edges on Stamped Patterns
Incorrect printing or lamination pressure can cause jagged edges. Adjust the printing pressure between the plate and impression rollers, and the lamination pressure, to eliminate rough edges.
Pinholes on Stamped Patterns
Caused by insufficient adhesive, low lamination pressure, or rough substrate surface. Replace the anilox roll to increase adhesive, increase lamination pressure, and if the substrate is rough, add a primer coat.
Stamped Patterns Not Scratch Resistant
Mainly due to incomplete curing of the adhesive. Increase UV lamp power for better curing, or apply a coating to enhance scratch resistance.
In summary, most cold foil quality issues are due to improper parameter matching, wrong material choice, inadequate equipment maintenance, or poor substrate pre-treatment. On the production floor, staff can follow the logic of "first check equipment settings, then verify material quality, and finally optimize substrate processing" for targeted adjustments. Regular equipment cleaning, standardization of process parameters, and material quality checks can reduce cold foil issues from the source and effectively improve the yield and stability of label cold foil products. ...
