Text is an indispensable element in our design. The rich font library provides a wide creative space for designers. We introduce common fonts such as GBK, PostScript, CID in "Common Character Library Description in Graphic Design". , TrueType fonts, etc.

Today we will introduce in detail the knowledge of the fonts that need to be understood in the prepress output.

First, the square font and its application in PSPNT

Beidafang is the earliest unit in China to engage in Chinese computer research and production. More than 70% of Chinese prints in China use the Founder font. The Founder font is in line with the national pen-shaped standard, and has been approved by the national authorities twice. It is a widely used font by government departments, education departments and press and publication units. Due to the wide variety of products in the Founder font, in order to enable you to better use PSPNT, we will briefly summarize the product below and its application in PSPNT.

The square font library has TrueType (also known as display font or front-end font) and PostScript (also known as issuing font library or back-end font). The PostScript is divided into Type0 composite font and CID font.

TrueType front-end display font

Refers to the font library used for screen display on the typesetting host (display fonts can be used in Feiteng, book edition, WORD and other software, but non-Founder software can not use 748 code fonts). The font used in Feiteng typesetting is the display font. Commonly used are 748 codes, GB, GBK, BIG5, and large font sets.

Founder Lanting: A standard TrueType font that can be used on the Windows 95/2000 platform for all common software and Founder software on the Windows platform. Three codes of GB, BIG5 and GBK are available.

Founder: It can be used in the MACTrueType font on the MAC platform. It is applicable to all common software on the MACOS platform and provides both GB and BIG5 encoding.

On the PC platform, the Founder Lanting font can be installed for layout design. On the MAC platform, the Founder font library can be installed for layout design.

PostScript backend font library

Refers to the font used for issuing the rear-end output settings (such as imagesetters, printers), also known as PS fonts (this font is installed on the back-end RIP software, such as PSPPRO, PSPNT). The hairline font cannot be displayed on the screen. Founder's fonts can be divided into 748, GB, GBK, BIG5, and large font sets according to their coding.

The Founder's font library and the Founder display font are one-to-one correspondence.

Founder Wenyun: PostScriptType0 font that can be installed on PSPNT, installed directly from PC or MAC, provides four codes of 748, GB, BIG5 and GBK. When the output device connected to PSPNT exceeds 1450DPI, you cannot use Fangzheng Wenyin font library. Output.

Founder Tianshu: Same format as Fangzheng Wenyun, but can be output on devices above 1450DPI. After installing the Founder Wenyu font library or the Founder Tianshu font library, there will be two subdirectories of Fonts and Fzdata in the PSPNT directory.

Founder CID font: PSPNT's special font library, providing 748, GB, BIG5 and GBK four encoding formats, and provides a set of large fonts. The Founder CID font is installed by default in the Font directory of PSPNT.

If the front-end typesetting software uses Founder Lanting and Founder's font library, the corresponding Lanting font is not installed on PSPNT, and you can output it by selecting the "Windows system's trueType font" option in the "Reset" dialog box. Similarly, you can also use PSPNT. The Chinese version of the TrueType font is installed on the host for output, but it should be noted that if the font is deformed in the front-end typesetting software (such as QuarkXpress, FreeHand), if the TrueType word or CID word output will report a syntax error.

When resetting the font in PSPNT, there will be a sequence problem of font recognition. When the "Use TrueType Fonts for Windows System" option is selected, first the TrueType word under Windows system, and then identify the correcting method specified in "Font Path". CID and Type1 fonts, if third-party fonts such as Founder Tianshu, Founder Wenyun, and Hanshi PostScriptType0 are installed, the third-party font library, that is, the font library under "PSPNT/Fonts" will be recognized. When the fonts of these three formats have duplicate names, the last recognized font is used for output.

Second, the font classification in Feiteng

There are three types of font classification in Feiteng: System English, Founder Chinese, and System Chinese.

1. System English

Refers to the English fonts of windowsfonts (Win2000 is in winntfonts). The characteristics of the system English is simply WYSIWYG, which can be used in software such as Feiteng, book edition, WORD, Photoshop.

2, Founder Chinese

Fangzheng's fonts developed according to its own standards, also known as 748 encoded fonts, such as "Report Song (Founder)" is Founder Chinese. The characteristics of Founder Chinese are: It is only applicable to Founder Software, which is not visible in non-Founder software, let alone used.

Another feature of Founder Chinese is that some fonts can be displayed in real time (this type of font needs to have a corresponding GBK font, such as "Report Song (Founder), if there is a Founder Song _GBK font corresponding to it, then it is Can be displayed in real time, that is, WYSIWYG), and some fonts can not be displayed, only the PS file is generated, and the RIP software output can be used to know what it is.

Many friends have asked: Since Founder Chinese can't be applied to other software, some fonts can't be displayed in real time. Why use it?

In fact, one of the biggest differences between Founder software and other typesetting software is that Founder has its own font, and the accuracy of the square font is not available in other fonts.

For a simple example, there are two lines of text, all of which are "People's Republic of China", all with the 5th word, one of which you select "fine circle (Founder)", the other selects "Founder Fine Circle", and then generates PS File, output with PSP31, what do you see? Try it.

3. System Chinese

Refers to Chinese fonts that conform to national uniform standards, ie Chinese fonts in windowsfonts (Win2000 is in winntfonts). System Chinese includes the fonts that come with Windows, Founder Lanting (ie GB-encoded fonts), GBK fonts (Book Edition 9 or 10 with 46 models, Feiteng only 9 models), fonts of other manufacturers (such as Han Yi, Wen Ding, Great Wall, classics, etc.) System Chinese is characterized by WYSIWYG, and almost all graphic design software and typesetting software support system Chinese.

Attachment: RIP is the abbreviation of RasterImageProcessor, Chinese translation is called raster image processor. It is an interpreter that converts the layout information described by the page description language into data information that can be output by the output device and outputs it to a specified output device. RIP is the core software of the entire prepress industry. The quality, output speed and openness of a desktop system depend to a large extent on the pros and cons of RIP. Founder Century RIP (PSPNT) is a whole-hearted RIP product based on WINDOWSNT developed by Peking University Founder Technology Research Institute.
