PageMaker is a grouping software that supports two International Color Consortium (ICC) compatible systems: the Kodak color management system on Macintosh and Windows platforms and the Color Sync2.x standard on the Macintosh platform.
PageMaker's color management system manages the color applied to PageMaker objects, the colors in RGB bitmap images, and the special colors of EPS files. Color management of RGB screen images of a CMYK TIFF file enables output to a color-mixed proofing device. The corrected color can also be changed to a CMYK TIFF target official output device. Color management of DCS, WMF, and PICT files is not possible.
First, the PageMaker color management system (CMS) open and close control
1. Open the color management system
When you use PageMaker to open the CMS, the system will change and transfer the color information transmitted in the input, display, color separation and printing to minimize color distortion. When the CMS is opened, other CMS systems should be turned off, otherwise chaotic results will occur.
(1) Select "File / Custom Format / General".
(2) Click "CMS Settings (CMSPreferences)".
(3) Select "Open" from the "Color Management" drop-down menu.
(4) Click "OK" to open the color management system.
2. Turn off the color management system
(1) Overall shutdown of the color management system
A. The color management system can be turned off as a whole in the following situations:
1 Do not use bitmap images in publications and only use special colors.
2 Only use CMYK color images that have been subjected to color separation processing.
3 Import only includes graphics that contain only DCS files and EPS files for process colors.
4 Use the post-processing application to create a separation of the publication.
B. Steps to turn off the color management system as a whole:
1Select the "File / Custom Format / General" command.
2Click the "CMS Settings" button.
3Select “Off” from the “Color Management” drop-down menu.
4Click the "OK" button.
(2) Partially closed color management system
When you don't want to manage the color of a particular image, you can turn off the color management of the image file, allowing the color information of the file to pass through the CMS without having to change. The color information is still useful for the output device, but is not color managed by PageMaker's CMS.
A. The color management system can be partially turned off in the following situations:
1 A CMYK TIFF image file created in image processing software, such as Photoshop, and directed to the official output device.
2 The image is color separated by the orientation device feature, and only the low resolution image is used to set the layout and positioning.
B. Steps to partially turn off the color management system:
1Select an image.
2 Select “Component/Image/CMS Source”.
3 Select “None” from the “This Item Uses” drop-down menu.
Second, the setting of PageMaker color management system (CMS)
Select the "File / Custom / General" command and click the "CMS Settings" button to display the CMS Settings interface (CMS Preferences).
1. "Color Management." This item is used to determine whether the color management system is on (select "On") or off (select "Off"). If Kodak CMS is opened when using PageMaker, the system will perform spatial changes and transfer of the transmitted color information in all aspects of input, display, color separation and printing to minimize color distortion.
2. "Monitor Simulation". This item is used to open the soft proofing function in color management so that the effect of the color separation file output can be displayed on the screen. There are "no", "composite printer". Options such as "Separation Printer".
3. "New project use." This item is used to determine which color management system to choose. There are options such as "None", "Kodak CMS (ICC)", "ColorCync".
4. “Kodak CMS (ICC) Settings”.
(1) "Monitor" option. Select a device profile that matches the display type;
(2) "Composite printer" option. Select a device profile that matches the output device (complex printer) used for color mixed output;
(3) "Separation printer" option. Select a device profile that matches the output device (separation printer) used to create the color separation;
(4) "RGB Image Source" option. Select a device profile to create an RGB color image;
(5) "CMYK Image Source" option. Select the device profile to create a CMYK color image.
The device profile described here will be automatically applied to all file objects created by itself as the system's default file.
Third, the pageMaker color management system (CMS) control function
Due to the embedded structure, PageMaker itself only provides the specific operation mode for color management. The main layer sets and manages the device profile for the color of two different processing objects: graphic text and color image. And color separation management of color images.
1. Coloring graphic texts to define their device characteristics with colors
Coloring device features for coloring include two aspects: manually setting new colors and letting color management (CMS) automatically assign device features to new colors.
(1) Manually set device characteristics for new colors
1 Select "Window / Display Color Board".
2 Select "Add Color" from the color palette.
3 In the "Color Options" dialog box, "Name" must be entered with a name.
a. Select the “color” (special color, printing color, and color) “touch” (RGB, HLS, CMYK) and color values to select the coloring color you need.
b. Select a color from the predefined Color Library.
4 Click CMS Source in the Color Options dialog.
5Select a color device feature (source profile) according to the following guidelines:
a. If you plan to create an RGB color, the device profile selected by that color should be consistent with the device profile of the user monitor;
b. If you plan to create a CMYK color, the device profile selected for that color should match the device profile of the user's Separation Printer.
6 Click OK to return to the Collar Options dialog.
7 Click "OK".
This completes the process of defining color device features for coloring.
(2) Let Color Management (CMS) automatically assign device features to new colors
1Select “File/Custom Format/General” and click “CMS Settings”.
2 In the CMS Custom Format dialog box, select the color management system from New Project Usage to set the device profile for the new color.
3 In the “Monitor Simulation”, specify the display description file for the newly created RGB color, specify the “Separation Printer” device description file for the newly created CMYK color, and select “None” to close the new color management.
4 Click OK to exit the CMS Custom Format dialog box. Then click "OK".
2. Color-to-color image defines its device characteristics
Color images can be produced from different sources, such as drawing programs, scanners, and the like. If created with an application with CMS cut, the image contains the device profile of the CMS, specifying the image
Produces a color gamut.
(1) Principles for the use of source description files when placing image files:
1 If the image was created with an application that supports Kodak CMS, the PageMaker application
Kodak CMS source description file.
2 If the source description file specified in the image file is not available, PageMaker applies the default CMS to select the default description file.
3 If there is no original description file specified in the image file, PageMaker applies the default CMS and selects the source description file that best matches the image color mode from RGB Image Source and CMYK Image Source.
4 If you want to change the device profile settings determined by PageMaker, you can reset the correct CMS source description file.
5 If the placed image is to be color corrected in an application such as PhotoShop, the source description file should be reset in PageMaker after editing.
(2) Two ways to set the color image device feature file
A. Apply a Source Description File when placing a color image
1Select “File/Place”.
2Select the image you want to place and click CMS Source.
3 From the CMS Source Description File dialog, select a corresponding device description file.
4 Click "OK".
B. Select device profile for color national imagery in the publication
1Select a color image, or select multiple images by holding down the Shift key.
2 Select “Component/Image/CMS Source” to also select a different CMS for the image or turn off color management.
3Select a signature file from the CMS Source Description File dialog.
4 Click "OK".
3. Pre-separation function for color images
PageMaker pre-separates color images without having to do it in other software.
(1) Two types of space conversion
1 Convert the color image file of the RGB space in the group file to a CMYK file according to the specific device feature file relationship.
2 Position a CMYK TIFF image to another CMYK output device.
(2) Several situations in which pre-separation processing is required for the group image
1 Perform CMYK color separation printing.
2 Further processing of publications does not support color management.
3 Create a CMYK image and keep it on the OPI server.
4 pairs of images are not corrected for RGB color space.
(3) Operation method of image pre-separation processing
1 Select the image to be separated.
2 Select "File / Export / Graphics", in the "Output Image" dialog box, select "Save as
Separation."
3 Type a name for the separation file and select the folder where you want to save the file.
4 Click “Settings” to select a screen preview option.
"Do not enter the image" will not produce a low-resolution screen pre-modern representation of the image;
"Best" will produce a screen preview of the original image with a resolution of 72dpi;
"Draft" will produce a screen preview of the original image with a resolution of 36dpi
5 Choose Link to new image.
6 Click "Save".
4. Change the output device description file before printing
From the "Print" dialog box, you can change the design description file of the selected "Color Mixer" or "Separation Printer". Before printing on different output devices, the device description file in CMS Custom Format should be changed to match the output device.
For best results when using color management, do not change the device description file for the Separation Printer. The choice of color mapping is usually based on the device description file of the "separation printer", and changing the device description file of the "separation printer" later in the color management process may not achieve the best results.
To change the user's output device description file before printing:
1Select “File/Print”. If printing on a PostScript printer, select the appropriate PPD for the output device.
2 Click "Color".
3Click “CMS Settings”.
4Select the device description file for “Color Mixer” or “Separation Printer”.
5 Click "OK".
6Select one of the following options:
*Select any additional print options and click Print.
* Hold down the Shift key and click Finish to save the newly created settings without printing.
