Cold stamping (Koldfoil) is an important breakthrough in printing technology in recent years. It combines traditional printing and lamination technology, and it is easy to operate. The printing factory can use the existing printing equipment to flexibly use cold stamping to create a publicity. Different effects not only reduce production costs, but also re-create the added value of products, thus becoming a new trend in the future. Mr.J. Michael Rivera from Amagic Holographics Inc. in the United States made a brilliant introduction to cold stamping in the comprehensive UV printing planning and product suitability seminar. Introduction, the following is a summary of the speech (translated by the manager of Guangqun Laser Technology Co., Ltd. Guan Shujuan):
Cold stamping is a method of transferring foil to a substrate using glue. The advantages are:
1. It can improve production efficiency and reduce cost: Cold ironing can be combined with front-end printing, one machine is completed, the operation speed is fast, and the production efficiency is high.
2. Low operating cost, suitable for small batch production.
3. Using print alignment, the alignment accuracy is high.
4. Increase the variability of the print design, and can produce the effect of metal ink.
5. Provide the effect of pseudo-counterfeiting: with customized holographic technology, laser transparent materials, or combined with other anti-counterfeiting technologies, it can achieve good anti-counterfeiting effects on printed securities.
6. Can be widely used in the printing industry and suitable for the proofing of the industry.
Cold stamping has been proven to be used in narrow flexo presses, narrow letterpress presses, and waterless Offset machines.
Cold stamping can be done by wet or dry bonding.
1. The printing method of the wet method is -
The image is printed on the substrate → the cold foil is bonded to the substrate with a pressure roller → the UV glue on the substrate is dried with a UV lamp to make the image sticky → remove the excess foil. However, precautions must be taken when printing:
(1) The glue can be printed on the surface of the aqueous solvent type and UV ink.
(2) There is a limit on the printing speed.
(3) The tension control of the foil and the substrate is important.
(4) The pressure roller must be installed before and after the UV lamp.
(5) Patterns such as thin lines, hollows, and fine dots can be printed.
2. The printing method of the dry method is -
The image is printed on the substrate → the UV glue on the substrate is dried with a UV lamp to make the image sticky → immediately turn the foil onto the adhered image with a pressure roller and remove the excess foil.
Precautions:
(1) The glue cannot be printed on the surface of an undried aqueous or solvent-based ink.
(2) The glue should not be too dry or insufficiently dry.
(3) It should be attached within 5′′ behind the UV lamp.
(4) High-hardness pressure roller and high pressure must be used when foil and substrate are bonded.
(5) Treatment and preservation of glue such as general UV ink
As for how to choose dry or wet paste?
The following can be applied to the dry fit:
Dry fit
1. Network
2. Thin line
3. Can do cold printing on UV surface
4. Suitable for paper substrates
5. Need to dry after
6. Must use the correct printing speed
Wet fit
1. Suitable for printing medium to large areas of images
2. Can be used for cold printing on water and UV ink surfaces
3. Substrate for film
4. No need to dry after
5. Printing speed is limited
Finally, Mr. Rivera cautions that there are still several things to note when applying cold stamping:
1. The quality of cold stamping depends on the quality of the glue being printed, so printing experience is extremely important.
2. Cold stamping can only be printed on a smooth surface and has not been printed on rough surfaces such as leather.
3. The glue will be absorbed on the rough substrate, so that there will not be enough glue on the surface of the substrate for cold stamping.
4. Currently only printing on roll substrates can be used.
