Industry giant Mondelez International takes action again! Cadbury drinking chocolate is now packaged in paper cans!

Mondelez International is transitioning the packaging of Cadbury Drinking Chocolate in Australia to a paper-based EnviroCan made by Amcor, replacing the traditional metal bottom paper can. The new packaging is made from over 60% recycled cardboard and is recyclable in Australian curbside bins. The redesign of the packaging is part of Mondelez International's efforts to enhance recyclability and support circular packaging solutions. It also includes a QR code linking to the company's SnackingRight platform, which provides recycling guidance and information on sustainability initiatives.

Natalie Thomas, the R&D director for Mondelēz International in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, stated that the company is proud to offer flavors familiar and beloved by Australians through sustainable packaging solutions. "Our partnership with Pact is a key step in advancing our packaging initiatives in Australia. By adopting EnviroCan, we are making progress towards achieving our sustainability goals and empowering consumers to engage in responsible recycling practices. This not only aligns with our commitment to sustainability but also meets the expectations of our customers and consumers-because it is the right thing to do." John McEvoy, the sales manager for Pact in the Australia-New Zealand region, mentioned that launching the paper-sealed can has been a true collaboration. "Both teams have flexibly tackled the design, testing, and implementation challenges, providing expert support at every stage. The final solution reduces environmental impact and meets the evolving needs of Australian retailers and consumers-demonstrating the power of innovation and collaboration." In fact, Cadbury Drinking Chocolate is not the first brand to use the EnviroCan paper can packaging. Previously, Pact collaborated with Marigold Health Foods to develop a brand new, fully recyclable packaging for various plant-based foods-EnviroCan. Pact stated that the composition of this paper can consists of 95% paper, with 60% derived from recycled materials. Although parts like the aluminum seal, LDPE lid, and liner still use other materials, overall, the proportion of paper cans has significantly increased. This collaboration marks a new breakthrough for Pact's paper cans in the market.

Compared to previous metal packaging, EnviroCan's total weight has been reduced by over 20%. This not only lowers fuel consumption during transportation but also reduces carbon emissions on the environment. To achieve this goal, Sinag has invested a significant amount of capital and, after two years of research and development, has finally launched EnviroCan. It is worth mentioning that this new packaging fully complies with UK and European recycling regulations, allowing consumers to easily manage it through their regular waste recycling. With the launch of EnviroCan, Marigold Health Foods once again demonstrates its firm commitment to sustainability. This packaging is suitable not only for nutritional yeast but can also be widely applied to various plant-based foods, such as broth, plant-based meats, and fish alternatives. The successful case of EnviroCan sets a new benchmark for the food packaging industry and drives the entire industry towards a more environmentally friendly direction.Similarly, another food company, Marguerite Health Foods, partnered with Sinag to launch a brand new, fully recyclable packaging specifically designed for various natural plant-based foods. Marguerite's product line includes nutritional yeast, broth, gravy, bouillon cubes, sauces, as well as plant-based meat and fish. Marguerite consistently uses high-quality ingredients free of artificial additives and palm oil to meet consumer demands for healthy, sustainable, and ethically produced products. This fully recyclable packaging solution designed by Sinag fully embodies Marguerite's commitment to sustainability and innovation, establishing a new benchmark for the industry.

Margaret's new packaging is primarily made of cardboard, complemented by aluminum foil seals and LDPE plastic lids. Several innovative technologies were employed during the material design and production processes. EnviroCan's paper bottom ensures food safety and optimal shelf life by providing an oxygen barrier layer and a moisture barrier layer. Compared to traditional rigid packaging, this new packaging is over 20% lighter, significantly reducing fuel consumption during transportation. Additionally, its environmental footprint is lower due to the use of sustainably sourced recyclable materials.Margaret's shift from metal cans to paper packaging is highly aligned with its commitment to environmental protection. 95% of the new packaging is composed of paper materials, with 60% sourced from recycled paper. This recyclable packaging design supports a circular economy and can be effectively recycled within the UK's waste paper recycling system. The remaining 5% is made of lining materials to protect the product. Currently, this new type of packaging has entered major supermarkets in the UK and is labeled with the OPRL recycling symbol to assist consumers in proper recycling.
