HP recently revealed a new bug bounty program tailored specifically for HP printer hardware. While many of us use only home printers to occasionally print documents or photos, in the enterprise, these devices are usually located in a network. If there are weak links in the business network, hackers can use a single device to destroy a wider network system. Because printer firmware updates are often overlooked, they are likely to be a tool for hackers.
According to the terms of the program, researchers can earn between $500 and $10,000 (about $68,000) each time they find a bug. If HP has discovered a security vulnerability internally, but the researchers report the vulnerability again, HP said it may issue certain rewards based on good faith.
The bug bounty program will be executed indefinitely, and HP plans to eventually extend the bug bonus program to its PC lineup.
