According to the latest Radar report released by the European Adhesive Label Association (Finat), the installed volume of digital label printers in Europe exceeded the sales volume of traditional presses for the first time in 2017.

The Radar Report, published twice a year by the European Adhesive Label Association (Finat), is the most authoritative market research and analysis report in the label processing industry. The source of the survey data is provided by LPC Consulting. The latest release of the Radar Report also pointed out that 2017 is a year of non-quality label growth.

unique perspective

The ninth edition of the FinatRadar Report introduces and analyzes the development trends, market status and prospects of the European label and narrow web printing industry from a unique perspective. In addition to the data survey and analysis in the Radar Processor Survey Report, the report also introduces revolutionary advances in digital label printing. In its first release of the Finat Digital Label Printer Index, the number of installations for the 2017 European digital label press was specifically introduced.

According to the report, nearly 300 digital label printers were installed in Europe in 2017, and with the addition of several new machines, the total installed volume of digital presses exceeded the number of newly installed conventional label printers for the first time.

Digital trends will intensify

The digital trend will intensify. According to Finat, 45% of processors said they will purchase digital presses in the next 18 months, with inkjet presses demanding more than toner and hybrid digital presses. The FinatRadar Report also details the investment quota for digital label printers. In 2017, 60% of digital presses installed on the European market ranged from 250,000 to 750,000 euros. Only about 10% of users buy digital presses for less than 250,000 euros, while another 8% buy more than 1 million euros of digital presses.

Growth sector changes

In the previous report of the FinatRadar Report, it was often pointed out that high-quality label processing departments, such as food, beverages, health and beauty, will achieve rapid growth. However, respondents to this year's Radar Processor Survey report made it clear that 2017 was a year of strong overall growth in the automotive, consumer durables, and industrial chemicals label markets. Among the four fastest-growing sectors, only the beverage market remains in all of the premium labeling sectors.

Key factors affecting end-user purchases

The survey required processors to rate the application of various types of expertise based on the importance of their customer needs. More than a quarter of processors say it is important to have digital printing capabilities, and only 4% of processors believe that digital printing is “not important”. The key technologies behind digital printing are removable adhesives, low migration inks, and extended text/extended content tags.

Most valuable tool

Mr. Chris Ellison, President of Finat, concluded: “Brands have repeatedly claimed that their label solution providers have once again introduced revolutionary innovative products that are more flexible than any other supplier in the packaging and printing sector. Finat's Radar Report helps members better access the areas they are good at, exceeding industry averages. The Radar Report provides information to help members make informed decisions about future growth strategies."
