In the pharmaceutical and healthcare field, labels carry core information related to medication safety, such as usage instructions and expiry dates. However, in practice, especially with labels on small-diameter injection containers, edge curling is a common problem that poses potential risks.

Usually, small-diameter injection containers refer to those with a diameter of 7–23 mm and a volume of 1–50 ml (slightly varying based on container type). Within this range, containers with a diameter of 7–12 mm are more prone to label curling.

What is label edge curling?

Simply put, label edge curling happens when one or more edges of the label lift away from the container surface. Although this can occur on various substrates, it's most common in curved labeling scenarios. The smaller the container diameter and the greater the curvature of the surface, the higher the risk of edge curling. Once the edges lift, in severe cases the entire label can peel off, stick to other medicine packages, or cause issues on the labeling production line, creating production and medication safety hazards.

Many syringes have a diameter of less than 7 mm, which also falls into the high-risk category. For 1ml or 3ml vaccine syringes, the container diameter is often under 10 mm. For labels on these containers, choosing the right labeling material is crucial to preventing edge curling.

What factors should you focus on when choosing label materials?

Adhesive

When selecting adhesives, focus on two key points: first, the adhesive's ability to stick on small cylindrical surfaces; second, the surface characteristics of the container itself. The most direct way to reduce curling is to switch to a specially formulated adhesive. These adhesives are pre-tested to stick reliably to small curved surfaces. Another approach is to use an overlapping label technique, where the label not only sticks to the container but also adheres to itself at the beginning and end, further strengthening the hold.

Face Material

Many people fall into a common misconception: just changing the adhesive can fully solve curling issues. In reality, a label is a composite of face material and adhesive, and only by working together can you achieve ideal adhesion and good cylinder surface attachment. So, choosing the right face material is equally important. For small-diameter injection containers, you generally need specially made thin paper or thin film materials that are flexible and highly extensible.

It's important to note that matching the right label material to small cylindrical containers is not simple. Beyond adhesive and face material, there are many other factors that affect the final performance of the label, such as:

· Product sterilization method
· Label size and structure (overlapping / non-overlapping)
· Chemicals that may erode the label or reduce print clarity
· Container substrate type (plastic / glass)
· Container surface treatment process
· Temperature and humidity during labeling
· Storage environment changes in temperature and humidity (including freeze-thaw cycles)

In short, small-diameter injection containers require specialized label materials to ensure labels stick firmly to the cylinder surface and have excellent durability. The pharmaceutical industry can't afford any mistakes-labels must ensure that key product information remains complete and clear, and that medicines reach patients safely.
