Scientists say a new type of food packaging material keeps soda water full of bubbles, keeps potato chips crisp and makes military food more palatable. This material is made of a very thin layer of nano-scale clay, which is the same as the clay used for making bricks but mixed with chemical polymers. According to its inventor, under the electron microscope, this thin layer looks like a brick wall made of mud.

Last weekend, the American Chemical Society unveiled this nano-brick material at an exhibition in Anaheim, California. According to the creator of the material, Germ Greenland, the material is “the best layer available to actually prevent oxygen from penetrating” and its containment is comparable to glass.

Snack manufacturers have tested a variety of packaging materials, mostly to prevent oxidation. But metal materials—such as those used in military ready-to-eat products—can't be heated in a microwave oven, and consumers can't see the delicious food in the bag without opening the package.

According to a statement issued by the American Chemical Society, this new material can be attached to existing plastic packaging to enhance its durability and isolate oxygen. It is made of montmorillonite clay, which is also used to make bricks, but it looks transparent.

According to the American Chemical Society, this material can also be used in sporting goods, which can make basketball or football use longer.
