With the rapid development of computer technology and network communication technology, the printing and publishing industry has undergone tremendous changes. The traditional printing process has been greatly impacted. PDF (Portable Document Format) has become an electronic file popular in recent years. Format, you can view, browse and print PDF files using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Adobe Acrobat 6.0 and PDF 1.5 are a major technological advancement compared to Adobe Acrobat 4.0 and PDF 1.3, which were introduced in 1990. Today, PDF has become an irreplaceable file format for prepress and high quality printing.

First, what is the pre-printing pre-test PDF?

PDF (Preflighting PDFs For Print) pre-printed, borrowing the English word Preflighting, refers to the pre-screening work carried out before the plane takes off to ensure the flight safety of the aircraft, and foolproof. Preflighting is used in the printing industry, which means pre-checking work before printing. Pre-printing pre-screening is undoubtedly crucial for the entire printing process.

As the printing industry continues to adopt new technologies, not only color desktop publishing systems (DTP) and computer-to-plate systems (CTP), but also new processes are emerging. In the face of a large number of new technologies, many experts in the electronic publishing industry predict that the final printer will only accept PDF files. Therefore, in the pre-printing work before printing, special emphasis is placed on the pre-printing PDF. However, according to the American Printing Technology Foundation (GATF) and Seybold magazine, only 23% to 30% of all documents currently prepared for printing in the United States use Adobe's PDF format. As time goes on, the number will continue to rise. The use of PDF file format in China is a matter of recent years, and it is mostly used for network transmission, mainly for the transmission of office documents, online e-books, etc., and the proportion of PDFs used in the printing industry is relatively small.

Second, why use pre-printed PDF

Since the PDF generator and receiver are independent of the operating system platform in the print production process, the PDF file format retains all the information such as characters, fonts, layouts, colors, etc. of the original file, and it uses an industry-standard compression algorithm to make the file Small capacity, easy to store and transfer quickly, with soft proofing function, easy to pre-check, file browsing is not limited by operating system, network environment, application version and so on. Therefore, the PDF file format will be quickly applied to various fields. However, in the printing industry, there are still many imperfections in generating PDFs for printing, and the receivers sometimes receive errors when receiving PDFs from customers. The most common problems with customers' PDF files are that the fonts are not embedded, the resolution is too low, there is no bleeding, and the color space used by the user is incorrect. In order to ensure the smooth progress of pre-press and printing, PDF is an inherent file format, and pre-inspection is necessary.

Now, Acrobat 6.0 Professional, along with various PDF plugins and applications, allows us to build a good workflow to accurately generate, pre-check and edit PDF documents. When you link good upstream and downstream prepress practices, you can achieve high-quality printing by successfully optimizing PDF files.

Third, PDF pre-test products

Products from many vendors help users generate optimized PDFs, as well as manage, inspect and modify PDF files. Here are a few of the software you can use for PDF preflighting or editing.

1. Adobe's Arobat 6.0 Professional

At the heart of Acrobat 6.0 Professional's preflight capabilities is the pdfInspektor2 from Callas Software, which, along with the ICC profile, provides the generation and validation of PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3. At the same time, in order to pre-check more than 400 standards in the PDF, the settings (rules and conditions) of the property file can be predefined. Users can define new profile files, or modify any existing profile by adding, deleting, or editing rules and conditions. You can also create a continuous batch that can import or export profile files. At the time of preflight, if a document's priority conflicts with the rules or conditions stated in the selected profile, they are listed in the preflight results and are selectively reported. pdfInspektor2 also provides a quick overview of the list of issues identified in the preflight. After the preflight, a confirmation icon can be added to inform the prepress service staff and other users about the validity of the PDF document. The icon is embedded in the results of the preflight profile and the preflight report and generates a time icon that allows the user to see if the file was changed at the preflight.

pdfInspektor2 also produces reports in XML format when integrating workflow products; pdfInspektor2 Auto is automatically used when used with AutoPilot. Automation is also the name of the processing/press program in Callas software, which provides a common server-based folder system for output centers and printers to automatically monitor and preflight received PDFs and convert them into PDF/X format.

2. Apago's PDF/X Checkup 3.0

PDF/X Checkup 3.0 is a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat for generating, pre-checking and automatically editing PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 files. Version 3.0 adds several new features, including PDF/X Plus workflow checking, and is compatible with Acrobat 6.0 and Mac OS X.

PDF/X Checkup 3.0 includes two additional plugins: ImageAlter and BoxEditor. ImageAlter allows users to modify resolution, compress images and change the color of images in PDF files. BoxEditor is a plug-in for quickly editing PDF/X requirements for bleed and cut boxes. It has a library for storing published specifications at any time. When the user clicks the "Fix All" button, Checkup automatically corrects most errors to produce a correct PDF. /X file, which also adds any missing tags required by the PDF/X standard. In addition, Checkup can add or modify output intent, either by using a registered name or by using an ICC profile as the standard required by PDF/X. Checkup's Details window lists all the errors or warnings found during the preflight and stores the complete report as a text file. PDF/X Checkup can detect TrueType fonts, JPEG images, spot colors, image resolutions, and more.

3. ARTS PDF ImageWorks 2.0 and Crackerjack 4.2

Both products offer some preflight features, although they are not considered true pre-test products, but can be used as image editing and color separation tools, respectively.

ARTS PDF's ImageWorks allows you to perform color transformations, image retouching, and image resampling, all without having to leave Acrobat. ARTS PDF's Crackerjack allows you to inspect PDF documents with or without embedded fonts, with the option to correct, print or eliminate print jobs. ARTS PDF Print Suite Plus bundles these two products.

4. Creo's Synapse Prepare Pro 2.0

Synapse Prepare Pro 2.0 is a process tool for generating and prefetching upstream PDFs (targeted for high-end users), allowing users to quickly generate PDF files and precisely match the technical specifications of a particular printing environment. These product specifications provided by the press are given in the form of "instructions" that allow users to generate accurate PDF files from original applications such as QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign. The PDF can also include preflight information, and the printer runs its customer's PDF file via Synapse Prepare Pro for preflight and report generation. These reports are called login files and list general information, errors, and warnings, as well as fonts, colors, images, and more. Some errors can be fixed automatically (such as RGB converted to CMYK), while some errors require the user to return to the original file for modification.
