How to Maintain the "Heart" of a Flexo Press? Remember These Details!

Perfect flexo printing cannot do without high-precision anilox rollers. Their precise ink transfer characteristics ensure the tonal range of images, making prints look vibrant, clear, and lifelike. Moreover, using anilox rollers gives flexo printing good color stability. That's why many industry professionals call the anilox roller the "heart" of a flexo press. For label printing companies, maintaining and caring for the anilox roller is essential to ensure flexo print quality. Common anilox rollers typically include chrome-plated and ceramic types. Below, we focus on the maintenance and care of ceramic anilox rollers.

01 Usage Precautions

Before starting the flexo press, operators need to inspect the condition of the ceramic anilox roller to ensure smooth subsequent production.

(1) Check the surface of the ceramic anilox roller for "scratches." If there are significant scratches, use must be stopped; otherwise, these scratches can quickly worsen, damaging the ink fountain roller and printing plate, ultimately affecting print quality. Operators should also avoid contaminating the ceramic anilox roller with grease from their hands, as oil residues impact the ink-holding and transfer ability of the cells. Additionally, operators must prevent metal objects like zippers or belts from damaging the roller cells.

(2) Inspect the transmission gears between the ceramic anilox roller and the ink fountain roller for debris, and apply a small amount of gear lubricant. This can improve the roller's stability in ink transfer and reduce the chances of streaks appearing in the print.

In actual production, avoid friction between the ceramic anilox roller and the ink fountain roller or doctor blade when dry. Ensure minimal pressure between the ink fountain roller and ceramic anilox roller or the doctor blade and ceramic anilox roller. Excessive pressure accelerates wear on the anilox roller and can cause uneven axial ink transfer. Doctor blades should be replaced regularly since prolonged use can damage the ceramic anilox roller. The hardness and edge length of the doctor blade also affect roller lifespan. Furthermore, when changing old and new doctor blades, adjust the pressure and angle to prevent scratching the roller surface.

02 Cleaning

Cleaning the ceramic anilox roller generally involves daily cleaning and periodic deep cleaning.

Daily cleaning refers to timely cleaning during component changes, typically using a cloth, special brushes, powder, or cleaning solution. After a stop, operators should clean the roller immediately to prevent ink from drying in the cells.

Periodic cleaning involves deep, comprehensive cleaning using specialized equipment to make up for the limitations of daily cleaning. Common methods include chemical flushing, micro-abrasive blasting, and ultrasonic cleaning. Note that after micro-abrasive blasting, the roller should be brushed again with cleaning solution for final cleaning.

Both daily and periodic cleaning can wear the roller cells. Therefore, after each periodic cleaning, the BCM value of the roller should be re-measured and recorded to monitor ink transfer status for printing.

03 Storage

Ceramic anilox rollers require proper storage: indoors in a dry place, avoiding direct rain and sunlight. If stored in wooden boxes, wrap the roller in natural fiber paper or leather before placing it inside. Outside of a box, wrap the roller surface in paper or leather and place it on a dedicated rack, ensuring surfaces of rollers on the same rack do not touch. Do not lean a roller directly on the ground, as it may slip and damage the ceramic coating.

When handling a ceramic anilox roller, operators should hold the ends. For long-distance transport, use a trolley to prevent accidental bumps or drops.

Although label printing companies need to invest time and effort in maintaining ceramic anilox rollers, careful care is the only way to extend their lifespan, ensure flexo print quality, and achieve better efficiency with less effort.
