Common issues in book quality inspection

The most common quality issues in books in recent years! How to control the four major cross-page alignment deviations?

 

In books, a two-page spread refers to laying out a complete unit of information (such as an image, table, etc.) directly across the left and right pages, so that when the book is opened, the left and right pages form a continuous whole. Designing a layout that spans from single pages to double-page spreads helps achieve overall page coherence, provides ample space for images, and creates strong visual impact, which is why it is widely used in book design. However, accurately presenting a full image across two pages requires not only high precision and stability in printing and binding by the production company, but also careful consideration by the designers regarding production processes and design reproducibility, in order to ensure the correct alignment of the spread. This article reviews common deviation issues in book spreads, analyzes their causes using real cases, and highlights key aspects in design and production that need attention.

Current Quality Inspection: Two-Page Spreads Still a Key Printing Issue

In recent years, reports from the National Press and Publication Administration's printing and reproduction quality inspections indicate that two-page spreads remain a primary printing quality issue. Of 51 unqualified book and journal samples in the 2023 inspection, 25 had issues with two-page spreads; in 2024, of 63 unqualified samples, 51 had such problems. The main defects include missing or broken strokes in text at the spread junction and excessive misalignment in the positioning of the spread.

Quality standards for books and journals in the inspection follow the "Printed Paper Product Printing Quality Inspection Standard Part 3: Books and Periodicals" (GB/T 34053.3-2017), which specifies that images and text should be complete. Positioning errors in two-page spreads should be ≤1.5mm; errors >1.5mm but ≤2.0mm are classified as B-level defects, and errors >2.0mm as A-level defects. A sample with one or more A-level defects, or four or more B-level defects, is judged as unqualified.

Main Types of Spread Deviations

01/ Vertical Misalignment of Two-Page Spreads

Vertical misalignment in two-page spreads (see Figure 1) refers to the situation where the images on the left and right pages are staggered vertically (along the spine, from top to bottom). The main causes are improper handling during production or unstable equipment. When patterns, tables, or text are misaligned from top to bottom, readers can immediately notice the "break," disrupting reading flow and lowering the perceived quality of the book.

02/ Horizontal Misalignment Across Folded Pages

Horizontal misalignment across folded pages usually comes in two types: one is when any single page or both pages of the spread shift too far toward the inner spine, causing the images at the spread break to be disconnected (see Figure 2); the other is when the pages shift too far toward the outer edge, resulting in parts of the images being cut off at the spread, creating a visually misaligned look (see Figure 3). If the missing parts include important elements or text, which significantly affects reading and information comprehension, the spread can be considered defective due to missing images and text.

The cause of this kind of problem is partly the same as vertical offset, related to the production process; the other part comes from the book design stage, where designers didn't consider binding techniques, the placement of joint patterns, or the difficulty of reproduction. Poor design leads to systematic misalignment of text and images.

03/ Skewed patterns across page spreads

If a joint pattern is skewed on one or both sides, it can also cause the position to exceed tolerance (see Figure 4). This problem is relatively rare and usually happens due to issues like misaligned paper cutting, folding deviations, or unstable equipment.

Therefore, manufacturers should first ensure that the paper cutting is square and up to standard, and regularly maintain and calibrate equipment to control deviations from the source. Next, sampling checks must be done during processes like folding and printing. If any offsets are found, they should be adjusted promptly to prevent errors from accumulating and getting worse during production.

04/ Compound Plate Shifts

In actual production, horizontal shifts, vertical shifts, and pattern misalignment can occur at the same time. This type is caused by a combination of multiple errors (as shown in Figure 5).

When this kind of compound error occurs, a systematic check should be conducted based on the principle of "design first, then production." The first step is to verify if the design parameters in the digital files are correct. If the design is accurate, then the root cause lies in the production process, indicating that error control in multiple stages has failed or has accumulated.

Key Control Points in Cross-Page Layout Design

Cross-page layout design is not purely an artistic task; it combines artistic creativity, printing process knowledge, and bookbinding expertise. It is the foundation for the success of cross-page layouts and the most critical step. Designing page layouts systematically with production processes in mind and proactively avoiding difficult cross-page layouts is the most cost-effective way to control overall quality, reduce scrap risk, and enhance product grade.

01 / Perfect Bound Books: Overlap Position Design

The characteristics of the perfect binding process make it difficult for books to lie completely flat. During binding, the book block needs to be milled at the spine, with GB/T 30326-2013 specifying a milling depth of 1.5mm ± 0.5mm. Without this technical adjustment, about 3.0mm of content at the layout edge may be missing. This can result in missing parts of images (see Figure 6) or text (see Figure 7) at the page alignment, seriously affecting the reading experience.

Figure 7 shows that the text is missing because the spread of the perfect-bound book wasn't adjusted.

So, when designing spreads for a perfect-bound book, it's a good idea to preset a 3mm overlap for the cross-page graphics in the digital file (like in Figure 8) to offset the effects of the bookbinding process.

02/ Effect of the fold line: graded compensation design

Unlike saddle-stitched softcover books, in a well-bound perfect-bound book, the first and last few pages near the cover can hardly be opened within the fold line (forcing them open will expose the glue spine). At this point, if the spread design near the cover isn't adjusted, parts of the design will get pressed into the fold line, causing image misalignment (as in Figure 9) or missing elements (as in Figure 10), which ultimately leads to unacceptable binding quality.

Figure 10 shows that not considering the gutter line can cause missing content in images and text.

The closer a page is to the center of the book, the less impact the gutter line has. So, according to the "Cross-Page Layout Quality Problem Solution" released at the 5th China Printing Industry Innovation and Development Conference, you can design different overlap sizes based on where the layout is on the page, gradually increasing from the center pages outward, and adding extra overlap on the outer pages to counteract the gutter line effect (see Figure 11). For specific settings, refer to Table 1. For example, for a book with 56 inner pages, Table 1 shows: pages 1–9 and the corresponding pages 56–48 should have a 7mm overlap; pages 10–15 and 47–42 should have a 6mm overlap; and so on, with the pages in the middle of the book using a 3mm overlap.

03/ Smyth Sewing and Perfect Binding: Reserved Glue Space Between Signatures

In the Smyth sewing and perfect binding process, a certain amount of glue can seep between the signatures during application, usually no more than 1.0mm. If a spread design happens to be right between two signatures and the design stage didn't reserve enough glue space, some parts of the design can get stuck in the gap between the signatures due to the glue seepage. Also, some companies have issues in the binding stage with improper glue control or excessive glue, which can similarly cause text and images to stick. These situations can directly lead to problems in the finished book, such as misaligned text and images or missing content (see Figure 12).

Usually, leaving a 1mm glue area for perfect binding (as shown in Figure 13) is enough to meet the proofing requirements. But when using thicker paper (like 128g/m² coated paper), to make up for the 'creep' caused by the paper thickness, you can add about 1mm extra overlap on top of the 1mm glue area.

04/ Principles for Designing Overlap Areas: Matching the Process

A well-designed overlap area ensures that key information is accurate while also giving readers a complete and smooth visual experience, without interference from process flaws.

Currently, many books still have problems with poorly designed overlap areas. With plain backgrounds like sky or land, or with horizontal spreads, this issue doesn't significantly affect the visual outcome. However, if the spread involves small text, people, or other detailed elements, it can cause missing or duplicated content.

As shown in Figure 14, the spread pattern is on pages P6 and P7. The designers didn't fully consider the binding process, the constraints of the book gutter, or the paper thickness, and the overlap area was too small. As a result, the pattern can't be fully displayed during normal reading. When you force the book open to check (which exposes glue and increases the risk of pages falling out), you can see repeated images-neither scenario allows the pattern to be displayed correctly.

The thread-lock binding process itself can ensure that all pages lay flat when opened. For the inner spreads of a book, special treatment is usually not needed. If you blindly increase the overlap (like in Figure 15), it can actually cause repeated patterns across pages, which can negatively affect the reading experience-sometimes even more than missing or misaligned patterns on the spreads.

05/ Layout of Text and Important Elements: Avoiding the Spine Seam

If the pattern across pages includes small text, even a misalignment of less than 1.5mm at the page junction can cause the text to be hidden in the book spine (as shown in Figure 16), affecting the reader's ability to get the information. In severe cases, the text at the juncture may be considered missing, resulting in a defective product.

As shown in Figure 17, although the misalignment at the spread junction of this sample is less than 2.0mm, because small text is designed at the junction, even a slight horizontal shift (or sometimes none at all) can make the text fall into the book gutter, making it unreadable. This can result in the product being marked as unqualified due to missing text at the junction. When there is small text in the spread pattern, it should be avoided at the junction, especially in places that require extra technical handling, like in perfect-bound or thread-sewn books.

If the design at a page splice includes important elements like the national flag, national emblem, or people, it must also be avoided. Placing key elements at positions prone to issues can not only create a poor visual effect but may also lead to political mistakes, so strict prevention must start from the design stage. The National Press and Publication Administration's "Notice on Strengthening Printing and Reproduction Quality Management" clearly states: "Major thematic publications must avoid political errors caused by technical mistakes."

06/ Special Content Handling: Flags, Maps, etc., Must Not Span Pages

Maps (especially national maps) include boundaries, key islands, country names, place names, and other important elements, as well as scales, coordinate grids, small text annotations, and small symbols. Their importance and seriousness far exceed regular patterns, and they require extremely high production accuracy. They should never be designed to span across pages.

As shown in Figure 18, due to misalignment in folding, the map pattern shows serious quality issues like clearly misaligned latitude and longitude lines, directional lines, missing text, and graphics. Especially for publications involving maps of our country, strict adherence to the "Regulations on the Administration of Maps" is required, and maps must not display content that "undermines national unity, sovereignty, or territorial integrity."

When a book needs to display a large map, it's better to place it across two separate pages (as shown in Figure 19). By avoiding joining the pages, you can fundamentally prevent unacceptable risks like pattern misalignment or missing information due to registration errors.

07/ Revised Books: Process Changes Require Redesign

When a book is reprinted after a revision, if the binding process, paper materials, or other physical properties change, designers must recheck the compatibility of the old layout with the new version. Currently, registration errors caused by changes in the binding process without adjusting the layout design are also quite common in quality inspections.

As shown in Figure 20, when a book upgrades its binding from perfect binding to sewn binding to improve print and binding quality, designers should first check whether the original book has overlapping design elements across pages. If so, the extra overlapping design needs to be removed, and depending on its position in the sewn-binding book (whether it's between signatures), consideration should be given as to whether further technical adjustments are needed.

Key Points of Quality Control in Production

Besides careful design upfront, quality control during production is also crucial to ensure that cross-page impositions are accurate. From prepress checks to paper cutting, from printing registration to final binding, every precise operation and stable control step directly affects the final presentation of the imposition design.

01/ Prepress Checks

Prepress checks are the key line of defense against cross-page imposition errors. Their core purpose is to systematically eliminate technical risks before files are sent to print. Inspectors must identify and correct structural defects caused by mismatched processes (like not leaving enough milling allowance for perfect binding) or improper design before production to prevent misalignment from the root. In recent years, the National Press and Publication Administration has consistently considered "whether files are checked before printing and whether the design matches the printing process" as a key focus when inspecting major topic publications, primary and secondary school textbooks, and enterprises under follow-up review.

02/ Paper Cutting

Paper cutting errors are a major cause of imposition deviations. If the paper is cut inconsistently or crookedly, these errors compound with deviations in later processes, significantly worsening imposition alignment issues. National standards set clear tolerances for paper cut length and squareness. For example, for an 80g/m2 paperback, the 《Requirements for Paperback Books》 (GB/T 30326-2013) specifies that the tolerance for cutting length every 150mm is ±0.1mm, and the squareness tolerance is ±0.2mm. Figure 21 shows a diagram of sheet squareness.

03/ Printing Stage



During printing, the first issue is inaccurate positioning of the front and side guides, which can cause the sheets in the same batch of books to shift overall, and in serious cases, may result in the batch being of poor quality. Additionally, even if the positioning is accurate before production, equipment wear and vibration during operation can still cause the guides to drift or become unstable. If the machine isn't stopped and adjusted in time, it will also lead to sheet misalignment. Therefore, production staff need to ensure the guides are correct on the first sample and also perform regular spot checks during production to maintain the accuracy and stability of the guide system. Figure 22 shows accurate printing positioning.

04/ Binding Process

If the positioning of the first folding step is off, or if the equipment's accuracy drifts during continuous operation, it can cause folding errors, which then lead to misalignment in the final book assembly. Besides, improper control of process parameters in different binding methods can directly affect the alignment: if the milling depth for perfect binding is too deep, it can make the images incomplete at the spine; if the crease line isn't accurate or deep enough, it can affect how the pages turn, causing misalignment; and if the glue penetration in sewn binding is too deep, it can make the images stick together and create alignment issues. The precision and consistency of these process parameters are key to achieving proper alignment in the final product. Figure 23 shows accurate folding during binding.

Solving the issue of misalignment across book spreads is technically complex and involves many steps, but it's not impossible. The key lies in deep integration and ongoing dialogue between design and production-designers need to fully understand the constraints of the craft, and production must accurately execute the design requirements. Only when both sides collaborate closely at every step, implement systematic controls, and strictly ensure quality can we find a balance between artistic expression and craftsmanship, truly achieving spreads that are "visually complete, easy to read, and reliably high-quality." Essentially, aligning spreads is a concentrated expression of the publishing industry's collaborative craftsmanship and precision, and it's a crucial challenge to overcome in the process of improving book quality.
