Advanced color management in the printing and packaging industry requires the realization of color consistency across equipment through systematic technical processes, and its core lies in the closed-loop control of three processes: color calibration, curve characterization and color space conversion. The ISO 12646 international standard specifies the minimum requirements for color display characteristics during soft proofing, including uniformity, focusing performance, refresh rate, size, resolution, brightness, and viewing conditions. (1) Set the display color temperature to D65 (to match the factory D65 light source) and set the Gamma value to 2.2.

Color management on the proofing end
01/ Color management for digital proofing
At the heart of digital proofing implementation color management is to address color reproduction differences between devices and ensure color consistency from design to output.
(1) Basic requirements for standard adaptability
(1) Color matching requirements: ISO 12647-7, as a digital proofing standard, requires the printer color gamut to cover the CMYK color gamut range of traditional printing (such as ISO 12647-2), and needs to achieve color gamut mapping and color gamut matching through ICC feature files.
(2) Gray balance control: The G7 calibration method is used to ensure that the L*a*b* value deviation of the neutral gray region is ΔE≤1.5, and the gradation consistency is achieved by adjusting the TVI (dot enlargement curve).
(2) Key management processes
(1) Equipment linearization calibration: use a spectrophotometer to measure the field density and network increase value of the printing machine; The ink volume curve is adjusted by DFE digital front-end to make the gradation error of 1%~99% dots ≤±2%.
(2) Feature file generation: Based on the three matching methods of ISO/TS 10128, the ICC feature file that complies with the Fogra or GRACoL standard is generated, and the CMYK to CMYK 4D spatial conversion is supported.
(3) Special scene processing: When using non-standard paper, such as gray paper, it is necessary to correct the color difference in real time through the closed-loop calibration system to ensure that the film is still in line with the standard after lamination and oiling.
(4) Cross-device consistency: The RGB direct connection technology of digital proofing manufacturers can simplify color matching, but it is still necessary to calibrate the printhead, ink and environmental parameters regularly, and mandatory calibration is required when the temperature and humidity change exceeds ±5%.
(5) Verification and iteration: Use the IT8 color target specified by ISO 12647-7 for color aberration scoring, requiring ΔE≤2.0 (commercial grade) or ΔE≤1.5 (high-end applications), and continuously optimize through cyclic correction.

02/ Color Management in Traditional Proofing
Standardization of printing files is crucial in the proofing process. The usual sequence is to first standardize individual files, then standardize imposition files, followed by standardization of color control bars, registration marks, and process information. Figure 1 shows a related example.

The prepress link has a very critical inspection action before publication, which needs to be reviewed and corrected again on the printed document, including bleeding check, overprinting check, graphic inspection, color separation check, etc.
Color management on the printing end
01/ Quality evaluation of color samples
(1) Standard sample determination: whether the color of the standard sample has faded deviation. If the sample changes color and adjusts the ink formula, the customer needs to reconfirm the standard; If the sample is well preserved and the measurement data can be referenced, no further confirmation is required by the customer.
(2) Determination of the upper and lower deviation range: take the standard sample as the standard, use the instrument Xrite Exact to measure the ΔEL*a*b* range of deep samples and shallow samples, the deviation value is controlled within 2.0~2.5, and the corresponding data is recorded, if the data range is small, it can be decided by both parties.
(3) Data measurement points: Our company needs to circle the corresponding measurement points on the product (standard sample, deep sample, shallow sample is the same), and the technical department marks the specific location for data recording and future sample copying. The sample of the number of measurement points should be one copy for each party.
(4) Measuring instruments and measurement conditions: Xrite Exact (L*a*b* method: CIE; Sensing mode: T; Light source angle: D50/2°).
02/ Elements of color management
The storage period of standard samples and upper and lower limit samples is one year; ΔE can refer to the industry strict standard 2.5, the measurement position and measurement point are consistent, and the color label is used as the data judgment criterion.
03/ Unification of parameters during bulk goods and proofing
The standard printing pressure, the pH value and conductivity of the standard dampening solution, the printing color sequence and the signature are the same. The ink density value is the same as that of the signature; The L*a*b* value of each group of inks is the same as that of the signature; The brand, model and signature of the printing material are the same, and the surface L*a*b* value meets the standard range.
G7 and C9 industry certifications for color management
G7 and C9 certification are the two mainstream standard systems in the field of print color management, and their core differences are reflected in technical principles, application scope and geographical adaptability.
01/ Differences in technical principles
G7 certification is based on gray balance control technology, which calibrates the CMYKRGB seven colors by defining a neutral gray density curve (NPDC), emphasizing visual consistency. The core parameters include: L*a*b* value (ΔE≤1.5) in the neutral gray region, TVI (dot enlargement curve) and NPDC matching, and GRACoL7 standard as the benchmark.
C9 certification is developed by the China Academy of Printing Science and Technology, focusing on "nine-point control" (yellow, magenta, cyan, black, red, green, blue, three-color overprint gray, paper white), and minimizes color difference through data control. Its core features include: optimization for Chinese paper and ink characteristics; Emphasize the standardized closed-loop management of the whole production process.

03/ Differences in Implementation Process
G7 certification is divided into two stages: matching the NPDC curve with gray balance, and optimizing color matching through the ICC profile. In contrast, C9 certification uses the "nine-point control method," achieving production standardization through quantitative parameters (such as color difference ΔE≤2.0), with a greater focus on training printing machine operators and monitoring processes. Considering these characteristics, exported printed products can prioritize G7 certification (due to higher recognition by international clients), while high-end domestic packaging printing can consider C9 certification (especially suitable for local clients and domestic material characteristics). Of course, some companies adopt a dual-certification system to meet both domestic and international market demands, which is also a wise choice.
In conclusion, color management and lean manufacturing are very similar; both belong to advanced standardization and long-term projects. The results may be visible in the short term, but the benefits are realized in the long term. Ultimately, the competition between companies depends on the battle of high automation and high standardization!
